Samsung announced today that the Gear VR (Innovator Edition) will arrive in the US next month. The Gear VR will cost $199 ($249 bundled with a Bluetooth gamepad). Of course you will also need a Galaxy Note 4 (with its 5.7" QHD Super AMOLED) to use this VR HMD.
Samsung's Gear VR is a Virtual Reality Headset (developed together with Oculus VR) that uses a Galaxy Note 4 for the screen, processor, sensors and audio.

I think Samsung's main objective here is actually to make more people buy a Note 4. I'm also guessing that to have good results you will have to tailor the HMD to a specific display.
I have not seen many lines in front of gaming stores recently for any item (the last one I remember was the Nintendo Wii);
in fact I have not seen many gaming stores at all; they keep vanishing;
in that sense I agree, the main objective might be to have people lining up for buying a Note 4, as this would then be the only smart mobile device having a tailored HMD.
In my opinion, it is a mistake for Samsung to limit this device to use with only the Galaxy Note 4. Gamers, in particular, would likely buy out Samsung's stock on these devices if it could be used with a PC. I, for one, would be waiting in line for this if it were something I could use with my PC. To have a buy a Galaxy Note 4 is a deal killer for me.
