DisplaySearch Announces Mixed Results for OLED Displays in Q2'06: Shipments Up 15%, but Revenues Down 14%

DisplaySearch revealed in its latest Quarterly OLED Shipment and Forecast Report that OLED shipments grew to 16.1M and revenues hit $112.0M in Q2'06. Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) displays compete with LCDs in small/medium applications such as mobile phone main displays and subdisplays, MP3s and automotive consoles. OLED shipments increased 44% Q/Q due to 48% increase in subdisplays and a 36% growth in MP3 player sales. PMOLEDs continue to dominate the market with a revenue share of over 98%. There are 23 small molecule and 2 P-OLED producers with small molecule having a 97% revenue share.

LG jumped past Samsung SDI and RiTdisplay and led in units and revenue in Q2'06 with 3.6M displays and $27.5 in revenue. Samsung SDI was #2 in both shipments and revenue, and Pioneer moved up to #3. Recovering from a very poor Q1'06, Univision was #4 in revenue, up 361%, and RiTdisplay fell to #5.

Other news include:

  • Ness Display (Singapore) closed its doors after producing 190K displays, as the company ran out of funds due to the combination of poor yields on color and the continuing reduction in ASPs. Varitronix (Hong Kong) was a major investor, and it is unclear whether they intend to take over the assets.

  • Teco (Taiwan) is moving their Fab from Taiwan to China and has stopped production.

  • Opto Tech (Taiwan) is attempting to find a buyer or an investor and has stopped production.

  • After reaching volumes of over 700K panels/quarter, Lightronix (Taiwan) was down to 30-40K.

  • AMOLED producers continue to struggle with LTPS yields, causing AUO and Chi Mei to reduce their staffing levels until the problems are resolved. Samsung SDI continues to forecast AMOLED production for Q4'06.

DisplaySearch Releases Flexible Display Report

While flexible displays offer the unprecedented distinctiveness of being thin, lightweight, unbreakable, conformable and rollable, the challenges that await those taking advantage of the opportunity require patience and capital beyond the reach of many companies.

Flexible OLEDs are predicted to enter the market in 2010, and grow to about 450M$ by 2015.

DisplaySearch Updates 2006 OLED Technology Report, Lowers OLED Revenue Forecast to $4.6B in 2010

DisplaySearch has updated its 2006 OLED Technology Report, a comprehensive examination of the fledgling OLED industry, which reached revenues of $491M in 2005, up 8% Y/Y, and unit shipments of 55.8M, up 72%. Updates are due to a number of recent changes affecting the OLED industry: Liquidation of SK Display, TMDisplay and Seiko Epson de-emphasizing commercialization of AMOLEDs, Pioneer closing its ELDis JV and the concurrent end of its AMOLED activity, Sharp reduction in small/medium panel ASPs due to over capacity in TFT LCDs, Continuing difficulty in using LTPS backplanes for AMOLEDs.

The OLED display makers are in transition from passive matrix to active matrix centricity, not unlike LCDs in the early to mid 1990s. The difference is that AMOLED display makers expect to ride the benefits of the existing TFT infrastructure created for LCDs. The report shows the status of material development, manufacturing (both evaporation and ink-jet printing) and the proposed solutions to high yielding a-Si and p-Si backplanes.

DisplaySearch Releases the Latest Quarterly Analysis of Organic Semiconductor Patents

DisplaySearch has released the Q1'06 issue of the Quarterly Organic Semiconductor Patent Analyst Report (OSPA). This latest issue of OSPA analyses the 1,598 granted and published patents relating to organic semiconductor technologies issued during Q3'05 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the Japan Patent Office (JPO), European Patent Office (EPO) and World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

In this issue of OSPA, key inventors of organic semiconductor patents for the period 2003-2005 are identified: The inventor with the most organic LED patents is S Yamazaki (Semiconductor Energy Laboratory, Japan), for organic transistors the most prolific inventors are K Hirai (Minolta, Japan) and then W Fix (PolyIC, Germany), for photovoltaics the top inventor is C Brabec (Konarka Technologies, US) and for organic memory devices it is S Pangrle (AMD, USA).

DisplaySearch and cintelliq Announce Organic Semiconductor Patent Report Distribution Agreement

DisplaySearch and cintelliq have announced a distribution agreement whereby cintelliq will produce and DisplaySearch will market and distribute the Quarterly Organic Semiconductor Patent Analyst Report (OSPA).
The Quarterly Organic Semiconductor Patent Analyst Report is a 200+ page quarterly report that provides an overview of patents related to organic semiconductor technologies that were published or granted by the European, Japanese, US or World patent offices in the previous quarter. Each issue analyses about 1200 patents, covering areas such as LEDs, substrates, photovoltaics, transistors, memory cells, encapsulation, materials, patterning, deposition, lasers, sensors, and fabrication.
The report classifies patents to identify areas of greatest activity, as well as highlighting interesting trends in research and patenting. The report also analyses the patents by assignee, tracking the major players in the industry and spotting new entrants to the field. Patents issued to academic organizations are monitored, as are patents issued to the major OLED licensors, Kodak and CDT, and their licensees.

DisplaySearch Releases 2006 OLED Technology Report, Forecasts OLED Revenue Over $5.1B in 2009

DisplaySearch, an NPD Group Company and the worldwide leader in display market research and consulting, has released its 2006 OLED Technology Report. The report presents a comprehensive examination of the fledgling OLED industry, which reached revenues of over $500M in 2005 up 18% Y/Y. The OLED display makers are in transition from passive matrix to active matrix centricity, not unlike LCDs in the early to mid 1990s. The difference is that AMOLED display makers expect to ride the benefits of the existing TFT infrastructure created for LCDs. Two of the major players in OLEDs, Pioneer and Kodak, have recently announced changes in their strategies, shifting their emphasis away from the production of AMOLEDs. The report will show the impact of these changes and how other display makers will shift to AMOLEDs and the impact on the applications targeted by AMOLEDs. It forecasts display units and revenue by Application, Panel Size, Panel Resolution, Material Usage, Active vs. Passive Matrix Driver Technology, Small Molecule vs. P-OLED.
