OLED display sales rise 31 percent in Q1, says DisplaySearch

Shipments of organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays grew sequentially by 31 percent to 9.9 million units the first quarter of 2005, despite a significant drop in subdisplay sales, according to market research firm DisplaySearch Inc.
Total OLED market revenue was $101.9 million, with South Korea-based Samsung SDI ($28.1 million) and Taiwan-based RITdisplay ($19.2 million) the leading suppliers.

RITdisplay captured 24.7 percent of shipments, with Samsung second at 23.2 percent.
DisplaySearch noted that small molecule OLED designs continue to drive volume, with monochrome polymer (P-OLED) and active-matrix OLED displays remaining in low volume.
Although OLED subdisplay usage fell, MP3 OLED display usage rose substantially in both revenue and unit sales, according to DisplaySearch.

DisplaySearch Launches its New Quarterly OLED Shipment and Forecast Report

Samsung SDI Led in 2004, But RiTdisplay Was #1 in Q4'04

Total shipments in 2004 were 31.2M, up 98%, and revenues were $446.1M, up 77%. The report forecasts shipments, revenues and ASPs by quarter through Q4'06. In addition to passive matrix OLEDs (PMOLEDs), there are four companies producing active matrix OLEDs (AMOLEDs) although the volumes are low due to the low backplane yields. The technology is expected to overcome low backplane yields and other problems in 2005, which should lead to high volumes in 2006

RiTdisplay to top OLED market in 1Q05

RiTdisplay is expected to overtake Samsung Electronics to become the top OLED supplier worldwide this quarter, while another Taiwan-based company, Univision Technology, will also edge up to take the third position, according to DisplaySearch.

In January, surging demand for MP3 players helped RiTdisplay record revenues of NT$161 million, up 16% sequentially. However, despite the company seeing its revenues fall 29% to NT$114 million in February, DisplaySearch still expects RiTdisplay to top all vendors in OLED shipments this quarter.

Univision has also benefited from strong demand in the MP3 player segment. The company had record revenues of NT$74 million in January and posted even better results in February.

With the industry seeing falling shipments on increased revenues, Taiwan OLED makers are looking to work their way up to the higher end of the market by producing larger, higher-end OLED panels, such as the active-matrix OLED (AMOLED) panels produced by their Korean and Japanese rivals.
