DisplaySearch reports that the worldwide OLED display revenue in Q3’08 was US$141 million, down 11% Q/Q but up 60% Y/Y.

Chi Mei EL, the #2 supplier of AMOLED displays, posted record high shipments in Q3’08, while the leading AMOLED supplier Samsung SDI—which will merge with Samsung Electronics’ small/medium business to form Samsung Mobile Display in January—experienced lower shipments Q/Q. As a result, AMOLED shipments increased only slightly compared to Q2’08, reaching 1.7 million units.

After a strong Q2, PMOLED shipments were affected by reductions in mobile phone sub-display orders, so shipments fell 22% Q/Q. However, most of the shipment reduction was in monochrome PMOLED, while area color and full color PMOLED gained popularity. This led to an increase in average selling price for OLEDs in Q3’08.

DisplaySearch analyzes the dynamic of OLED display industry: shipments by each supplier; AMOLED vs. PMOLED; small molecule vs. polymer; monochrome vs. area color vs. full color; and shipments by application, such as mobile phone main display, sub-display, MP3, auto console, car audio, digital still camera, near-eye, TV and others.

RiTdisplay passed Samsung SDI to take the lead in total OLED shipments with 36% market share. Samsung SDI is #2 in shipments, but still the leader in total OLED revenues thanks to its AMOLED shipments. TDK passed Pioneer to become #3 in shipments at 17%, while Pioneer fell to the #4 position at 12%; Univision was #5. The top five suppliers accounted for over 95% of total OLED shipments in Q3’08, as shown in the following table:

Nanomarkets: the markets for OLED materials will reach $2.7 billion by 2015

After receiving investments totaling billions of dollars over the past decade, the OLED industry is finally poised to take off. According to NanoMarkets, an industry analyst firm based here, the markets for OLED materials will reach $2.7 billion by 2015.

Key Findings:

  • The recent announcement by Nokia requiring its vendors to be capable of producing OLED displays is a strong indication that OLED technology is about ready for broader commercial production. GE Global Research's success with roll-to-roll production of OLED devices indicates that OLED lighting may result in greater near term production volume than displays. Sony meanwhile has launched the world's first OLED TV. The rise of lighting and television applications, in particular, are positive for materials suppliers, because these applications require large OLEDs and hence use much more material than the small cell phone and MP3 player displays that have until recently dominated the OLED space.

Mobile phones makers are slow to adapt to OLEDs, but 60% of new MP3 players have them

DisplaySearch says that SamsungSDI's AMOLED second quarter shipments are down 22% from previous quarter (the forecase was an increase of 12%) due to low demand from phone makers, including Nokia. The slowdown is expected to continue in the next quarter.

Total AMOLED revenue was 54M$, down 27% quarter to quater.

PMOLED shipments are up 17% from previous quarter (20M$), after 3 quarters of slowing down. PMOLEDs are now 60% of the MP3 players market.

RiTdisplay had a record quarter with revenues of US$33.8 million. Pioneer maintained its shipment volume of 4.4 million units, most of which were monochrome displays. Chi Mei EL (CMEL) also reported AMOLED revenues of only US$7.6 million, down from US$12.8 million last quarter.

Q3'07 OLED Display Revenues Disappoint as Samsung SDI's AMOLED Program Is Slow to Reach Full Production

In what was expected to be a strong quarter with Samsung SDI reaching their full production goal of 1.5 million AMOLED displays per month, the company barely reached the 100K mark down from 350K in Q2’07 as reported in DisplaySearch’s latest Quarterly OLED Shipment and Forecast Report.  The low production level left the OLED display industry with revenues of only US$78.3M in Q3’07 down 38% Y/Y and 31% Q/Q.  Shipments were 15.5M for the quarter, down 32% Y/Y and 22% Q/Q.  The low production for the industry was also impacted by LGE, one of the industry leaders, shifting resources from PMOLEDs to AMOLEDs and shipping only 310K units vs. 3.1M in the prior quarter and Sony with no AMOLED production as the company prepared to begin shipping the XEL-1, the world’s first AMOLED TV in December ’07.  The news was not all bad as:

  • RiTdisplay had a record quarter and led in revenues with US$31.0M and units with US$6.4M.

  • Pioneer was #2 in units and #3 in shipments, while Samsung SDI, the only company shipping both PMOLEDs and AMOLEDs, was #3 in units and #2 in shipments.

  • Samsung SDI has already upped its production and expects to ship >2M units in Q4’07, while RiTdisplay should continue its explosive performance with shipments of more than 7M units, a new record for one supplier.

  • Chi Mei EL also started production of AMOLED displays with volume of 16K, a number they expect to double in Q4’07.

  • MED joined eMagin as the only two companies shipping microdisplay-based OLEDs.

Samsung SDI was able to announce a number of design wins with the Japanese mobile phone carrier AU  announcing AMOLED main display mobile phones by Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, Hitachi and Sanyo.  Previously, Samsung SDI announced design wins with Nokia and Kyocera.  The new AMOLED main displays are all in the 2.8 category, which should help the mobile phone makers recover the premium prices charged for AMOLED displays.

DisplaySearch: OLED Display Market Continues to Flourish; Revenues Up 13% and Unit Shipments Up 24% Year over Year

With the release of the highly anticipated AMOLED displays, this segment continues to develop, experiencing unit shipment growth of 4% Q/Q and 24% Y/Y—hitting the 19.8 million mark in Q2'07. On a revenue basis, OLEDs hit US$123.4M in Q2'07, down only 1% Q/Q and up 13% Y/Y, even as ASPs fell 9% Q/Q. Over the last year, main display shipments were up 16%, sub-displays up 77%, car audio displays up 35% and industrial displays up 295%.

DisplaySearch revealed these Q2'07 OLED results in its Quarterly OLED Shipment and Forecast Report. The report's findings also show that active matrix OLED (AMOLED) displays are beginning to impact the market, as Samsung SDI moves into full production, and Chi Mei and LG begin to ship qualification units. Furthermore, Sony is expected to begin shipping their highly anticipated 11" AMOLED TV display in Q4'07.

The top five OLED manufacturers shown in Table 1 accounted for a combined market share of 85.4%. For the first time in several quarters, there were two new entrants in the PMOLED market, Visionox and Truly, which are both located in China. Next quarter, MED is expected to begin production of microdisplays and will be the first OLED competitor for eMagin.

Volume shipments of AMOLED displays continued in Q2'07, with Samsung SDI, Kodak and eMagin shipping a combined total of 1,445K displays for applications such as MP3s, mobile phones and near-eye panels. Overall, Pioneer led in units shipped with 5.1 million, closely followed by RiTdisplay at 4.8 million, Samsung SDI at 3.7 million, LGE at 3.1 million and TDK at 1.3 million units. Also of note, LGE will not ship any passive matrix OLED (PMOLED) displays in Q3'07, as the company is converting to AMOLED production.

Sub-displays and MP3 player displays continue to account for about 88% of OLED shipments at 14.1M and 3.5M, respectively. Of the remaining applications, main displays and industrial applications showed strong growth.
