DisplaySearch: 2011 AMOLED revenue up 169% to $3.36 billion

DisplaySearch estimates that AMOLED revenue in 2011 reached $3.36 billion on 90 million units. Revenue grew by 169% (from $1.25 in 2010) and unit shipments grew 97%. Revenue grew faster then units because the average smartphone display is getting larger. According to DisplaySearch, AMOLED share of the small/medium display market is now 12% (up 6% in 2010).

These numbers are actually lower than what DisplaySearch estimated back in August 2011. Back then they said unit shipments will be 128 million and revenue will reach $4 billion.

DisplaySearch: LG's OLED TV will cost $8,000, will drop to $4,000 by end of 2013

DisplaySearch estimates that LG's 55" OLED TV (the 55EM9600) will retail for around $8,000 when it launches in 3Q 2012. The price will fall below $4,000 by the end of 2013 as sales volume increase and manufacturing cost will drop.

DisplaySearch also says that they expect LG to sell less than 500,000 units annually of these TVs. This is actually a bit optimistic - as LG themselves said that their production line will be able to output 30,000 TVs a month (that's only 360,000 sets a year).

AMOLED Manufacturing Capacity 2008-2014 chart

Most of the grown in 2012 and 2013 will come from Samsung's AMOLED fab - as other players are still watching Samsung's progress, with LG, AUO, CMI and Irico also expected to built pilot and/or mass production plants in the next two years. DisplaySearch: AMOLED mobile phone display market to reach $4 billion in 2011, $6.4 billion in 2012

DisplaySearch released a new mobile phone display report, in which they say that the fastest growing display technology is AMOLED. AMOLED unit shipment in 2011 will be 128 million (a 191% increase over 2010) and 212 million in 2012 (66% increase over 2011). In terms of revenue, AMOLED will reach $4 billion in 2011 and $6.4 billion in 2012.

Most estimates we've seen so far say that total OLED revenues in 2010 were about $1 billion, and that's for both PMOLED and AMOLEDs (not just for phones). So DisplaySearch estimates that the AMOLED market will more than quadruple this year!

DisplaySearch sees rapid expansion of LTPS capacity for AMOLED and LCDs

DisplaySearch says that strong demand for Low Temperature Polysilicon (LTPS) based displays (LCDs and AMOLEDs) will drive rapid expansion of LTPS capacity. Spending on LTPS-equipment is expected to reach $2.4 billion in 2011 (and will decrease in 2012 and 2013).

DisplaySearch says that making AMOLEDs and high-end LCDs like the ones used in Apple's iPhone 4 is only currently possible with LTPS. In 2011, supply of both AMOLEDs and LTPS LCDs are forecast to be extremely tight. Leading panel makers are for the first time ever scaling LTPS technology to Gen-5.5 and larger substrates.
