Samsung SDI, South Korea's largest display screen manufacturer, announced a plan to invest 450 million dollars in its next generation mobile display production lines by 2006.
Samsung SDI set aside 465.5 billion won (450 million dollars) to boost facilities to produce the panels which use active matrix organic light emitting diodes (AM OLEDs), it said in a statement.
Screens using AM OLEDs are regarded as promising displays to replace existing liquid crystal displays (LCDs) because they are more energy efficient.
Samsung SDI plans to begin mass producing the AM OLED-based displays from 2007 with an annual capacity of 20 million units, which should rise to 50 million by 2008.
