CNet has posted an interesting video in which they test whether AMOLED displays are better than LCDs. The conclusions? The AMOLED provide better colors, but also less accurate ones. They also suffer under sunlight (although the new Super-AMOLEDs are quite good). See for yourself: (update: the video is no longer available)

How is it that a whole bunch of comments and 'proof' of the flaws of amoled and (super-amoled) have only now come now, a good 2 years after they first came out? I can't help but think these 'gurus' are being paid by some fruit company still stuck on lcd to put all these claims out there, especially seeing as now Samsung are using their amoled screens exclusively for themselves this is sounding very much like an anti-amoled campaign by others.
How do you get "better" out of something "less accurate"?
That's all I want to know. Really. Answer me that and I'll go away. Honest.
The OLEDs in this demo might be "less accurate", but if you look at the display, you might find that you like it better. So it *is* better...
That was an interesting video, but the results were not entirely surprising. What people must remember when watching this video is that they are comparing "small device" AMOLED screens to "small device" LCD screens. The matrix used in such AMOLED displays has limited colour accuracy due to the "PenTile matrix" which displays green subpixels and alternating red and blue subpixels. This improves energy efficiency, saves space and cuts manufacturing costs - at the expense of image quality.
