So, CES 2007 is over. Here's a short summary of all OLED news from the trade show.
The big story was Sony's new OLED screens. Sony displayed two OLEDs - 27" and 11". While we have seen larger displays (Samsung had 40" AMOLEDs about 2 years ago), it seems like this time people got excited. There were two reasons for that. First of all, the displays simply looked great. There were tons of visitors that said that these displays are amazing. The second reason is that Sony's CEO said that Sony is 'close' to mass produce these devices, and said that it might even be possible to have small OLED TVs as soon as 2008.
Samsung and LG both showed small AMOLED (2"-3") displays. Obviously not as exciting as Sony's TVs, these are much closer to be produced. Both companies are supposed to start making these in 2007, and hopefully we'll see phones or A/V players using these screens in the second half of this year.
Sandisk have released their first MP3 player with an OLED. It's a small one (1.1"), but it's still good news - Sandisk is the second largest MP3 player maker, and it's good to see them trying out OLED displays. Toshiba showed a video player with an OLED display, which seems very much the one they showcased a year ago.
The biggest news in CES was actually the new Apple iPhone showed at MacWorld. There were a lot of rumors that it will have an OLED display. Apple didn't say what technology they are using, but it's a 3.5" display, and I don't believe it's an OLED. Samsung's AMOLED will be smaller than 2.6", and LG's largest will be 3". Even though Sony did make 3.5" displays two years ago, I don't believe Apple would use this in the iPhone.
