OSD, an OLED reseller says that they had a good year in 2008, and they hope to see a nice growth in sales for 2009.
OSD is not selling just OLEDs, but they do say that they won many new color OLED design wins - so we're expecting new devices soon.
They will also get new, larger AMOLED displays in 2009. The largest one they carry currently is the 7.6" one from CMEL.
Not sure if this should be posted as OLED news... but MIT Labs has introduced a new small Cute Robot that has OLED eyes. The robot is called TOFU, and it applies techniques of social expression long used by 2D animators
to explore the impact on robotics.
Here's a nice video from CES showing the iRiver SPINN with its 3.2" touch AMOLED display (480x372):
Kodak has reduced the price of their Wireless 7.6" OLED Photo Frame to 856$ (From 999.95$). This is still expensive, but a bit less so. Here's the product page at Amazon (currently only 5 units in stock...)
Hopefully this means that CMEL has lowered the price for the OLED panel - which might enable more applications for it.
Here's a nice video showing OQO's Model 2+, the ultra-mobile PC with the 5" AMOLED display:
OQO indeed announced their new UMPC model, the OQO Model 2+, as we reported a week ago. It has a 5" touchscreen AMOLED, 800x480 (WVGA).
The Ultra-Mobile PC has a new Intel Atom processor (1.86Ghz), 2GB of RAM, cellular 3G connectivity and can run Windows Vista or XP. The HD is 120GB. Check out this video of the new model.
The new Sony Walkman will be called Walkman NWZ-X1000. It includes indeed a 3" (432x240) touch AMOLED display, together with some hardware controls. It has noise cancelling - and Sony claims it's the best sounding walkman ever. It includes Wi-Fi and support for many music and video formats. Check out this small video 'preview':
Gizmodo reports that Sony is indeed releasing their OLED touchscreen walkman - the NWZ X1000. It has internet capabilities via Wi-Fi and comes in a 16GB or 32GB version.
Matthew Miller from ZDNet reviews the Nokia N85, and just loves the OLED display. He actually got it because of the OLED display, which he saw on the Samsung i770 (I then saw the OLED display on the Samsung I7710 S60 device and fell in love with the brightness and true colors).
Here's what Matthew said about the N85's OLED: As I said above and cannot keep saying, the OLED display looks
fantastic. The colors are bright and evenly lit with no side or
backlighting. The display is viewable for virtually any angle and looks
great in the dark and in direct sunlight.
