When the Zune HD launched, there was an interesting blog post on the Apple-Insider site. They wanted to 'smash' five myths on the Zune HD, and one of the Myths is about the OLED display. They claim that OLEDs consumer more power than LCDs, are less bright, do not last long and are bad in direct sunlight. Barry Young from the OLED Association has responsed in his own blog post - basically saying that OLEDs look better, have even longer lifetime than most LCDs and consume less power.
Barry also says that when Steve Jobs first saw an OLED display, he said that's the best looking display he had ever seen. We're all waiting for Apple's first OLED product...
The only truth in the Apple-Insider article is probably about the sunlight visibility. We have discussed this issue before, and Zune HD users are indeed complaining.
The Zune HD has actually got great reviews, and it was sold-out within days of its launch. Some consider it as the first real competitor for the iPod touch, and most people love the OLED display. The Zune HD costs 290$ for the 32Gb version, and 219$ for the 16Gb.
A review of Samsung's W880 mobile phone:
The SCH-W880 is a Korean-market digital camera and a mobile phone in one featuring a 3.3" WVGA AMOLED touch display and a 12Mp camera with 3x optical zoom and HD video recording.
CrunchGear reports that the Zune HD is not readable in sunlight... and they have a picture showing how bad it is:
Just a couple of weeks ago we posted about direct-light issues with OLEDs. Even though we hear that the new OLED displays are better than older ones, they still appears to be very problematic in sunlight...
Update: the video has been removed from YouTube...
Here's a nice video showing the Zune HD's OLED (3.3", 480x272 multi-touch AMOLED) vs the iPhone's LCD display. The colors come out better on the OLED, and the overall picture and video quality is better (although it's not easy to see this when viewing it on an LCD, of course).
The Zune-HD (with its 3.3", 480x272 multi-touch AMOLED) is listed as 'sold-out' in all major internet outlets, such as Amazon, NewEgg and BestBuy. Amazon is listing a 1-2 month wait for the 16GB model and a 1-3 week wait for the 32GB. It is still available at Microsoft's own store.
Volkswagen (VW) has introduced their new L1 Hybrid concept car, which they say is the most fuel-efficient car in the world. It uses 1.4 liters of diesel to run 100km (61 miles). It's a very small car, and weights only 350Kg or so, and has a tiny fuel tank of just 6.3 liters (1.7 gallons). VW says that the L1 hybrid will be available in 2010, in limited numbers.
The L1 uses an OLED display - for the display screen in front of the driver (we do not know the specs of the display yet). Some reports say that there are actually two OLEDs, one in each side of the driver.
Microsoft's Zune HD is shipping today. It's a flash based PMP, with HD radio and video, Wi-Fi and a large multi-touch OLED display (3.3" 16:9 480x272).
The Zune HD costs 290$ for the 32Gb version, and 219$ for the 16Gb.
The Nikon S70 is now shipping , with a 366$ price tag. The S70 has a 3.5" touch OLED display. It also has 5x optical zoom, 12.1Mp camera, 720 HD movies, and Nikon's Optical-Vibration-Reduction.
Engadget reports that there are rumors that Nokia is set to release a new AMOLED phone next month. The Erdos (part of the high-end 8xxx series) has a 2.4" (320x240) OLED display, A-GPS, 3G support, Wi-Fi, USB, a 5Mp camera and 8Gb of internal memory. It's an ultra-thin, ultra-shiny slider.
