Chinese OLED developer Royole announced its next-generation (3rd-Gen) fully flexible OLED displays, which it refers to as "Cicada Wing". Royole says that these new displays deliver significant improvements over its previous generation displays. The new displays have a material stack of over 100 layers.
Cicada Wing displays, compared to Royole's 2nd-Gen flexible OLEDs, offer 5X higher contrast, 50% higher brightness, 20% faster response time and a better color shift. It also offers a low brightness decay (Royole says it is 3.5X better then competing foldable OLEDs).
Royole says its new displays have a bending radius of 1 mm and have passed 200,000+ bending cycle tests. The new displays low color shift means that the display performance remains great - from any angle and also when the display is flexed.
Royole also announced that its next foldable smartphone, the FlexPai 2, will use the new display - a 7.8" foldable AMOLED. The FlexPai 2 will be released in Q2 2020 to the consumer market, and will also feature the company's new new hinge technology, the so-called "3S Hinge". The FlexPai 1 was announced in November 2018 and was sold in very limited quantities to developers.
