In February 2019 Samsung Display started production its new 15.6" UHD (3840x2160) OLED laptop display panels. SDC is targeting premium laptops, as these ultra high resolution panels are optimized for gaming, graphic design and video streaming.
Samsung already signed up a few customers - including HP with its Spectre x360, Lenovo with the Yoga C730 and Dell with the XPS 15, Dell G7 15 and the Alienware m15. According to a new report from Taiwan's Digitimes, Samsung is aggressively seeking new customers for its OLED laptop displays - and the company has pricing its 15.6" OLEDs at only $50-60 above comparable LCD displays.
Digitimes also says that notebook makers are facing some challenges with integrating the new OLED displays into their notebook chassis - which could delay the availability of the 2019 OLED notebooks. We know that Dell already delayed its OLED laptops by at least one month. Samsung aims to produce 1 million OLED notebook panels in 2019.
Finally, Digitimes reports that its sources indicate that China's Everdisplay has also developed a 4K OLED laptop panel, and will start marketing this panel soon, to compete with SDC.
Samsung says that the new AMOLED panels, in addition to the very high resolution, feature high contrast ratio, extreme color accuracy, full HDR compatibility, a very wide color gamut, and remarkable outdoor visibility. The brightness level ranges from 0.0005 to 600 nits. Coupled with the high contrast (120,000:1), this maximizes the HDR benefits.
Samsung also says that the displays support the entire DCI-P3 color gamut - while emitting "significantly less blue wavelengths" compared to LCDs. Blue light emission can potentially be harmful to the eye.
Take my 60 $ and give me OLED instead of LCD, and preferably in the form of a computer monitor.
