Omdia sees a rebound in the display production equipment market

Market research firm Omdia says that display production equipment sales will rebound in 2024 and reach $7.7 billion (154% over 2023), and will grow slowly in the near future, mainly driven by 8.6-Gen OLED production lines (used to make IT displays).

Omdia says that the new 8.6-Gen OLED fab require novel technologies, which results in high equipment costs. In 2024, 32% of all spending ($2.4 billion) will be for Samsung's A6 line, a large investment for a 15,000 monthly subtrates fab. BOE's investment in its upcoming B16 flexible 8.6-Gen line will be even higher - by 18% due to the backplane choice (LTPO over Samsung's oxide-TFT A6).

Toray Research Center (TRC) has launched a new open online webinar focused on OLED inspection and analysis technologies. TRC, who supplies technical analysis and support for R&D and manufacturing, invites you to attend the online lectures at no cost, to get a deeper understanding on OLED inspection and analysis, and how to achieve higher performance displays. The webinar recordings are accessible until February 15.

The first presentation, titled Identification of Trace Impurities Using High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (Toward High-Quality OLED Panels), details examples of possible degradation in OLED devices that lead to performance reduction. In this presentation, TRC discusses the role of analysis, the advantages of high mass resolution, different evaluation techniques and how it can help developers increase the performance of OLED displays.

China-based OLED microdisplay maker Lumicore raises $100 million in its Series A funding round

Shanghai-based OLED microdisplay maker Lumicore announced that it has closed its series-A funding round, raising $100 million. Lumicore will use the funds to ramp-up its 8-inch production line in Nanjing, and introduce its first products to market.

Lumicore developed several OLED microdisplays, including a 2K 144Hz 1.32" display.  The company is also developing 4K microdisplays.

Samsung Electronics signs a 5-year WOLED supply agreement with LG Display

In July 2023, Samsung Electronics officially launched the 83" 83S90C, the company's first TV to use LG's WOLED panels, following several years of negotiations and hesitation by the Korean rivals. Samsung then continued to launch more WOLED TVs, but did not made large orders, as it mainly uses QD-OLED panels from SDC for its high-end TVs.

According to a new report, Samsung Electronics has signed a five-year WOLED supply agreement with LG Display. This is an interesting development that may have implications for Samsung Display's QD-OLED production plans. We do not have more details, it will be interesting to learn what kind of volumes Samsung committed to.

Single-layer TADF OLEDs outperform the best multi-layer device in both efficiency and lifetime

In 2023, we reported on research conducted at Germany's Max Planck Institute, led by Prof. Paul W.M. Blom, that looks into single-layer OLED devices. In such devices, a single TADF OLED emitter layer is sandwiched between two electrode - a much simpler design compared to commercial OLED devices that use multilayer stacks, sometimes with 10 or more layers. The researchers the the MPI say that in fact it is possible to develop highly efficient OLEDs with just the TADF emitter - and have demonstrated 100% IQE single-layer devices, with an EQE of 27.7%

Prof. Blom's group continues to improve its single-layer TADF OLED device, and have now reported that by employing a recently developed trap-free large band gap material as a host for the DMAC-BP OLED emitter, a nearly balanced charge transport is achieved. The device achieves a record power efficiency for DMAC-BP TADF OLEDs of 82 lm/W - surpassing  the best reported multilayer power efficiencies of 52.9–59 lm/W. This is due to the lower operating voltage. The single-layer device reaches an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 19.6%, which is only slightly lower than the reported EQEs of 18.9–21% for multilayer devices. In addition to the high power efficiency, the operational stability is greatly improved compared to multilayer devices and the use of conventional host materials in combination with DMAC-BP as an emitter.

BOE reports a 70% drop in profits in 2023, as demand for displays remains low

BOE Group says that profits in 2023 dropped almost 70% compared to 2023, as demand for displays is low. BOE says that its profit in 2023 will be in the range of 2.3 to 2.5 billion yuan (around $324 to $350 million USD). Including some nonrecurring items, the company expects to report a net loss of $77 - $100 million USD in 2023 (that's around 70% lower than the loss in 2022).

BOE says that its LCD business was more profitable in 2023 - which likely means that its OLED business is still incurring losses. BOE updates that it shipped almost 120 million flexible AMOLED displays in 2023 (in October it said it sold over 100 million).
