Sigmaintell: Asus is the leader in OLED laptop shipments, expects the market to continue its fast growth

Sigmaintell says that in 2021, Asus shipped 36% of all OLED laptops, and is the market leader. Asus is followed by Samsung (20%), Lenovo (16%), HP (10%), Xiaomi (8%) and Dell (8%).

In 2021, 5.3 million OLED laptops will ship (representing around 2% of the total laptop market). The main producer of these OLED panels is Samsung Display - who produces almost all laptop OLED panels. In 2020 SDC produced 800,000 units, and so shipments grew almost 7X in one year.

LG supports the Smithsonian's FUTURES exhibition with OLED technologies

In celebration of the Smithsonian’s 175th anniversary, America's oldest national museum is holding a new exhibition, called FUTURES, which aims to present a hopeful future with four concepts: Futures that Unite, Futures that Inspire, Futures that Work, and Futures Past.

LG Display is supporting this exhibition with several OLED panels. There will be 55-inch FHD transparent OLED displays, a 83-inch OLED that will show a documentary series called Futures We Dream, and a couple of 48-inch OLED panels that demonstrate the delicate value of life on Earth.

LG Display and EyeSafe release a blue-light whitepaper

Blue light management expert Eyesafe, together with LG Display, published a white paper that examines the major display technologies for television, including LCD and OLED, and their potential influence on eye health and circadian rhythm. Exposure to blue light affects sleep cycles by suppressing levels of melatonin in the brain.

One of the benefits of OLED TV is its naturally low blue light emissions as compared to those of traditional LCD TVs on the market. "Even while maintaining perfect black and high contrast characteristics with excellent picture quality, OLED provides the user with better eye comfort and viewing experience".

3D Micromac appoints Marko Gerlach as CFO

Germany-based laser micromachining and roll-to-roll laser system developer 3D Micromac announced that Marko Gerlach will become the company's CFO, effective immediately. The previous interim CFO, Frank Jäger, will remain with 3D-Micromac AG for a period of time to help ensure a smooth transition before leaving the company.

Samsung Display to expand its foldable OLED module production factory in Vietnam

As demand for foldable phones is increasing, Samsung Display is reportedly planning to add three more module production lines in Vietnam to expand its capacity. Once these three new lines are added, SDC will have 10 foldable OLED module production lines in Vietnam.

SDC's current monthly foldable OLED module production capacity is around 1.5 million units, and these new lines will expand SDC's capacity to 2 million units. SDC expects to install the new equipment in 2022. This will help the company reach its target of 18 million foldable OLED panel shipments next year.

Unijet supplies OLED microdisplay TFE inkjet deposition systems for Sidtek

According to reports from Korea, Unijet has supplied China-based Sidtek with inkjet printing systems, used for thin-film encapsulation (TFE) deposition of OLED microdisplays. This is Unijet's first sell of a commercial TFE printing system.

Sidtek, established in 2016, is now producing 0.39" XGA OLED microdisplays, which are available on the OLED marketplace. Sidtek's 0.39" display is available in a color version (1,000 nits) or a monochrome one.

DSCC: foldable smartphone shipments grew 480% in Q3 2021

DSCC says that Q3 2021 was a record quarter for foldable smartphones - with shipments growing 215% from Q2 2021 and 480% from Q3 2020 to reach 2.6 million units. Samsung Electronics controls the market with a 93% share, followed by Huawei (6%).

DSCC expects the growth to continue and shipments in Q4 will reach almost 4 million units. Looking at specific models, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a 60% share, followed by the Galaxy Z Fold 3 with a 23% share.
