ETNews: Samsung to use a full-screen OLED on the GS8 and a new OLED materials recipe

According to a story on ETNews, Samsung aims to use a full-screen display in its next flagship phone, the Galaxy S8. To achieve such a display, Samsung is using a flexible AMOLED that is wrapped around all four sides of the phone (unlike its current edge phones that are cured on two edges only).

SDC M8 vs M7 OLED materials recipe comparison

ETNews also says that SDC is set to update its OLED material recipe. The so-called M7 iteration was used in the Galaxy Note 5, the GS7 and the Note 7. But now Samsung is updating its recipe to M8. You can see the different suppliers in the chart above. Karl Guttag: Magic Leap's AR display is most likely an OLED microdisplay

Microdisplay-expert (and personal friend) Karl Guttag posted an interesting article in which he delves deep into Magic Leap's patent filing and demonstrations to try and understand the technology used by the stealth AR startup that raised over $2 billion from Google and other companies.

An eMagin OLED microdisplay

While it seems that Magic Leap is developing several different technologies and perhaps even several devices based on different displays, Karl's conclusion is that an OLED Microdisplay is the most likely candidate for Magic Leap's demonstration unit (which may be different from the actual future commercial version).

Is Apple's recent $4 billion component order an OLED purchase?

In Apple's recent financial filings, the company details a $4 billion purchase order with more than a year duration. This purchase order coincides with an "off-balance sheet obligation" for the same amount from the third quarter.

J.P. Morgan's analyst says that this order is related to Apple's long-term OLED sourcing deal from Samsung Display - probably for the next-gen OLED iPhone. J.P. Morgan further connects this order to a comment by Apple that it may have trouble acquiring troublesome components "on commercially reasonable terms". OLEDs indeed are currently supply-strained and Apple needed to make sure it has enough capacity.

UDC reported its financial results for Q3 2016

Universal Display reported its financial results Q3 2016: revenues were $30.2 million (down from $39.4 million in Q3 2015) and the net loss was $1.5 million (down from $7 million in Q3 2015). UDC says that the lower revenues are due to increased customer production efficiency and product mix - and also a decline in host material sales. Royalties fees were $5.2 million, unchanged from last year.

UDC has $301 million in cash and equivalents, and in the third quarter the company generated $4.1 million. The company's guidance for full-year 2016 remains unchanged, and revenues are expected to be in the range of $190 million to $200 million.

Digitimes Research: Samsung will begin QLED TV production in 2019

Samsung Display is still struggling with technical issues in its large-area OLED TV program, and SDC's TV focus switched to quantum dots enhanced LCDs a couple of years ago. These TVs use the photoluminescence of QDs to enhance the white-light produced by the LED backlights.

But quantum dots also feature electroluminescence - which means that these materials can be used to directly emit light, in a similar way to OLED materials. This technology has several challenges to overcome before it can be mass produced though, but Digitimes Research now reports that Samsung is aiming to produce so-called Q-LED TVs by 2019.
