You can pre-order Samsung's Galaxy Tab S AMOLED tablets, will ship on June 26

Last week Samsung launched their new AMOLED tablets (the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and Galaxy Tab S 10.5) - and today it turns out that you can already pre-order the tablets on Amazon.com. Both tablets will ship on June 26, sooner than expected. The Galaxy Tab S 8.4 costs $399.99 while the larger Tab S 10.5 costs $499.99.

Those two tablets have pretty much the same technical specifications: a WQXGA (2560x1600) Super AMOLED display (359 PPI on the 8.4", 287 PPI on the 10.5"), Android 4.4, a 1.9 Ghz Octa-Core CPU (2.3Ghz quad-core in some markets), 8MP camera, 3GB of RAM and 16/32 GB storage and a micro SD slot. The DoE funds four new OLED lighting development projects

The US DoE announced it selected nine new SSL projects which will receive $10.5 million in funding (including the cost-share contribution, the a total of $13.7). Four of these one- to two-years projects are OLED projects (the rest are related to LEDs).

OLEDWorks' project is titled "High-Performance OLED Panel and Luminaire". The company will develop low-cost OLED electrode structure and panel light extraction technologies. Using a system approach to determine the best component combination, OLEDWorks hopes to develop and integrate the cost effective manufacturing technologies necessary to achieve the DoE's performance and cost targets, demonstrated on a large scale. This project will cost $2 million, the DoE funded 50% ($1 million).

Huawei's Talkband to launch in the UK on June 30 for £99

Huawei launched their TalkBand B1 smart wearable device in February, made it available in China, but now it's finally coming to Europe too - Amazon.co.uk lists it for £99 and says it will ship on June 30. Hopefully it will launch in the US soon.

The TalkBand has a curved (flexible) 1.4" 128x16 PMOLED display, made by Futaba. This is Futaba's film OLED, and it's the first device to actually adopt these panels. It's great to finally see flexible PMOLEDs on the market. TDK Micro (bought by Futaba) has been showing flexible PMOLEDs since 2010, and it took them almost four years to actually bring those to market.

Samsung launches 8.4" and 10.5" Super AMOLED Galaxy Tab S tablets

So there we have it - Samsung is finally putting AMOLEDs back in tablets. The Korean giant unveiled their two new tablets yesterday, both called Samsung Galaxy Tab S - one with a 8.4" display and the second with a larger 10.5" display. Both Super AMOLED displays offer the same resolution - WQXGA (2560x1600), which means 359 PPI for the 8.4" tablet and 287 for the 10.5" one.

Both the Tab S 8.4 and the Tab S 10.5 have the same hardware and software specification: Android 4.4, a 1.9 Ghz Octa-Core CPU (2.3Ghz quad-core in some markets), 8MP camera, 3GB of RAM and 16/32 GB storage and a micro SD slot. Both tablets are only 6.6 mm thick, and the 8.4 has a 4,900 mAh battery while the 10.5 one has a larger 7,900 mAh battery.

LGD sees more than 5 million OLED TV panels produced in 2015

There's an interesting article posted in Korea's eDaily News, quoting an LGD senior official - saying that LGD plans to produce over 5 million OLED TVs in 2015 (in fact they hope to sell between 5 and 6 million). LGD makes around 50 to 60 million TV panels (mostly LCDs of course) - and they want OLED panels to account to around 10% of all TV panels shipped.

LGD does not expect LG Electronics to sell all those OLED TVs - they are confident and Chinese makers (and perhaps Japanese makers as well) will help them sell that large number of panels. Both Skyworth and Changhong are already offering OLED TVs that use LGD OLED panels. And it is reported that both Sony and Panasonic are in talks with LGD for OLED panel supply.

Samsung to release two Note 4 variants, one with a curved display?

A few hours ago I posted about a report from SamMobile, saying that the Galaxy Note 4 will sport a QHD AMOLED display. I promised that we're gonna see more rumors regarding this phone, but I didn't think it was so quick.

Samsung Galaxy Round

eMagin demonstrates a direct-emission OLED microdisplay prototype

eMagin demonstrate an ultra-high brightness full-color direct-patterned (DPD) OLED microdisplay. The so called OLED-ULT is 30 times brighter than the company's current largest-selling display, and it's 5 times more power efficient. eMagin says they are already shipping demonstrators to key customers - for applications such as aviation head mounted displays, smart glasses, and commercial augmented reality applications.

It will probably take a while for the company to actually commercialize those displays. eMagin is developing DPD panels since 2012 at least - it's not an easy process. Currently all OLED microdisplays on the market use color-filters on top of white OLED subpixels, and a direct-patterned microdisplay is much more efficient. The Fraunhofer COMEDD is also developing DPD OLEDs.

SamMobile: The Galaxy Note 4 will sport a QHD (2560x1440) AMOLED display

SamMobile says they got some exclusive info on the upcoming Galaxy Note 4. The display will be an AMOLED panel - with a QHD (2560x1440) resolution. They do not know the display size. The rest of the spec, according to SamMobile, is a Sony 16MP camera module, and the same 2 mp front camera like in the GS5.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3Galaxy Note 3

The Note 3, released in September 2013, has a 5.7" Full-HD Super AMOLED display (386 PPI, PenTile), a 2.3 Quad-Core CPU (or a 1.9Ghz octa-core in some markets), 3 GB of RAM, 32/64GB of storage and a a 13 MP camera. It's likely that Note 4 will have a similarly sized (or a bit larger) display.
