Dresden's COMEDD is open - will Germany become an OLED production center?

The new Center for Organic Materials and Electronic Devices Dresden (COMEDD) facility is now open in Dresden, Germany. COMEDD is owned and operated by the Fraunhofer IPMS and it will be used to make OLED displays and lighting products, and also OPV panels.

Fraunhofer hopes that COMEDD will become a production center for OLEDs and not just a research center with pilot lines. The researchers at COMEDD will focus on OLED displays on glass, Microdisplays on silicon (in partnership with MED) and flexible displays on plastic. They will also make OLED lighting on glass or flexible substrates.

PolyPhotonix is building a new OLED light production line

PolyPhotonix, a UK based OLED-lighting startup is building its first production line. They want to make 3M efficient OLED panels with high yields. They say their main markets are automotive and architectual lighting. In fact they got their first funding through a project called MENDIP, in which Sanko Gosei (a Japanese car interior maker) is another partner.

The production line will make the OLEDs on 200x200m glass substrates, at least initially. Later perhaps they will use flexible plastic substrates.

Funai developed a new efficient 'emissive' LCD display with 'paper characters quality'

The Funai Electric Advanced Applied Technology Research Institute developed a new efficient type of LCD, that actually does not require any backlight.  The display is very efficient - it uses 1% of the power of regular LCDs.

The new displays use a special dye that changes colors when current is applied. The display quality is 'on a par with printed characters on paper'

The Vuzix AV230XL Headset Is Using MED's P-OLED Microdisplays

Vuzix AV230XLMicroEmissive Displays (MED) just announced that the Vuzix AV230XL Headset announced a few days ago uses their EyeScreen P-OLED Microdisplays. The Tiny OLED Microdisplays bring large-TV like experience with the headset (like watching a 44" TV, actually).

The AV230XL is a video headset, designed to be used with many kinds of devices - from A/V players like the iPod to game consoles and mobile phones.

More info on CMEL's 7.6" AMOLED and a picture

CMEL 7.6 AMOLEDWe've got some new info on CMEL's 7.6" AMOLED. And we also have photo...

The panel is 7.6 800 x 480 Active Matrix OLED. It boasts a temperature independent response time of less than 50us across its entire operating temperature range. The module’s contrast ratio is better than 10000:1 and is not affected by viewing angle limitations. The emissive nature of the AMOLED panel does not suffer from gray scale inversion as TFT-LCD technology often does.

The module has a LVDS display data interface and a SPI control interface. It has overall dimensions 177.30mm (W) x 118.32mm (H) x 5.6mm (D) with an. active area of 165.60mm (W) x 99.36mm (H).

Hodogaya Promotes Its Transport Materials for The Novaled PIN OLED Structures

Hodogaya Chemical and Novaled have agreed to offer hole transport materials (HTM) for Novaled PIN-OLED structures. Hodogaya has exclusively developed specific HTM for Novaled fitting very well with the Novaled PIN OLED structures. As a first result Novaled is enhancing its material offer with an additional hole transport material called NHT18.

The new NHT18 has a similar behavior in OLEDs like NPB, but provides additional advantages to OLED manufacturers. For example, the Tg of NHT18 is above 130C and thus gives a high temperature stability in OLED devices. The current efficiency in today's fluorescent blue emitting PIN OLEDs is 10% higher.
