Will HiSense retire its OLED TV line in favor of dual-panel ULED-XD tech?

In November 2018 HiSense launched its first OLED TV range, the Series X and later in Europe. According to reports, demand for HiSense's OLEDs were lower-than-expected, at least in Australia. In 2019 the company also unveiled its dual-LCD (ULED-XD) technology that achieves a very high contrast ratio.

According to PC Magazine, HiSense decided to retire its OLED line of TVs, and instead adopt ULED-XD technology to compete in the high-end segment.

This is a bit of a surprise - as only a couple of weeks ago it was reported that HiSense developed several OLED technologies to enable higher brightness, lower burn-in and better color accuracy in its future OLEDs.

ULED-XD uses two LCDs panels, one on top of the other. The inner LCD is a monochrome (greyscale) FHD LCD that is used to block the light on low brightness images, and on top of it is the usual 4K full-color LCD. This is basically a way to achieve a high number of 'local dimming' zones for an LCD display (over 2 million such zones, in fact). The January 2019 ULED-XD prototype panel was very bright (over 2,900 nits) and reportedly offered a great image quality and an almost perfect contrast.
