Tianma aims to initiate OLED production in H2 2016, shows first flexible AMOLED

Shanghai Tianma demonstrated the company's first flexible AMOLED at the MWC 2016 exhibition. The panel is 5.46" in size and features a 720x1280 resolution and a rather large curvature radius of 20 mm.

The company also had regular glass based panels on display - a 5" and 5.5" FHD panels and also lower resolution 5" panels (720p). Tianma aims to start mass production in the second half of 2016 - but production volumes will be low as this is based on a small Gen-4.5 line.

Tianma shows a 5.5" Full-HD AMOLED prototype

The OLED Association reports that Shanghai Tianma demonstrated a new 5.5" Full-HD (400 PPI) AMOLED prototype. This is the highest-resolution display ever shown by the Chinese display maker, and reportedly they have adopted a subpixel scheme not unlike Samsung's Pentile technology. To achieve the high resolution, Tianma developed a dual-FMM technology in-house.

Tianma has been developing LTPS AMOLED technology for quite a while, and according to our information they are getting ready to release the first panels in 2016. Tianma has plans for three separate OLED production lines.

A new OLED industry alliance formed in Shanghai

Shanghai EverDisplay, Shanghai Tianma, Yurui Chemical and YShanghai University and more parties formed a new OLED industry alliance. It's not clear what the alliance's charter is, but apparently the Jinshan district in Shanghai aims to become an OLED production hub.

Everdisplay plans to start mass producing AMOLED panels towards the end of 2014. Everdisplay is building a 4.5-Gen AMOLED fab with a monthly capacity of 15,000 substrates. The company aims to be the first AMOLED maker in China.

Tianma OLED production updates

Tianma has been developing AMOLED technologies for a long time, and in August 2010 have decided to build a pilot AMOLED production line (4.5-Gen) in Shanghai. This pilot fab is able to produce around 1,000 glass substrates in a month. I visited Tianma's booth at SID 2012 and saw their direct-emission AMOLED prototypes (3.2" 320x480 and 12.1" 1280x800) made on an LTPS backplane:

Today we learned some more about Tianma's OLED and LTPS program. The company's first step is indeed the pilot line in Shanghai. This pilot line produces 2,000 monthly LTPS substrates. The company uses half for LCD and half for OLED production. Total investment in this pilot line amounted to 500 million RMB (over $82 million USD).

OLED-Info discusses OLED glass with Corning

Corning's John Bayne PhotoCorning's Harrison Smookler photoCorning recently announced the new second-gen Lotus XT high-performance glass suitable for OLED displays. The company has been supplying glass substrate and cover glass for OLED displays for years now. Now Corning was kind enough to participate in a Q&A session here on OLED-Info to better explain how they see the OLED market and what the future holds for Corning and OLEDs.

We talked to two Corning executives. John Bayne is Corning's High Performance Displays VP and General Manager, while Harrison Smookler is the commercial director and program manager of Willow Glass Substrates (flexible glass).

Tianma to use Corning Lotus XT Glass in their LTPS LCD and OLED panels

Tianma selected Corning's Lotus XT Glass for its line of LTPS panels. Tianma is currently producing LCDs but will hopefully start AMOLED production in 2014.

Tianma says they chose Lotus XG Glass because of the advanced properties of the glass. The company’s LTPS line is located in Xiamen, China, and has a capacity of 30,000 TFT modules, and more than 30,000 color-filter modules per month. It is the first Gen 5.5 LTPS line in China.

Correction: Tianma did not develop a 4.5" Full-HD AMOLED display

A few days ago we reported that Tianma developed a 4.5" Full-HD AMOLED panel. Now we hear from a trusted source that this report was in fact wrong - the company did not develop any such panel.

When I talked to Tianma at SID they said that the current plan is to first focus on LTPS LCD production, with an aim to achieve mass production in 2013. Only then they will start adapting the process for OLED production, with mass production to start in 2014. If last week's report was wrong indeed, then I assume the company still aims for OLED mass production in 2014.

Tianma developed a 4.5" Full-HD AMOLED panel

Correction: according to our trusted source, this report was wrong - Tianma did not develop such an AMOLED display...

According to reports, Tianma developed a 4.5" Full-HD AMOLED panel. In a recent trial production run the company managed to produce the panels (in addition to 3.2" AMOLED panels as well). Tianma may be possible to mass produce these panels in 2013 - with an aim to become one of the world's leading smartphone display makers.

The company has a pilot 4.5-Gen AMOLED fab in Shanghai (it was reported in 2010 that the pilot line's cost was $72 million and the Chinese government helped with $40 million in funding). The pilot fab is able to produce around 1,000 glass substrates in a month. Tianma's prototype panels shown at SID (in June) used a direct-emission architecture and an LTPS backplane. I assume the new panels use the same architecture.
