AUO demonstrates several OLED panels and technologies at SID 2017, and the excellent video below walks through these displays with lot's of details.

First up is AUO's foldable 5" 1280x720 (295 PPI) high color gamut (95% BT.2020) display announced last month. JJ Lih, AUO's R&D manager, says that the company expects to have this display in mass production within 2 years. The panel is only 1 mm thick and the bending (folding) radius is 4 mm.

Oculus developed a new way to improve extended focus depth issues with VR HMDs. The so-called focal surface display augments a regular HMD setup by using a spatially programmable focusing element placed between the eyepiece and the underlying color display.

Oculus's prototype unit uses an eMagin WUXGA (1920×1200) 60 Hz color microOLED display. Oculus is currently using SDC's AMOLED displays in its commercial HMDs. It is great to see the company experimenting with microOLED displays as well, even if these are just prototypes at this stage.

Sony recently started shipping its first OLED TV, the XBR-A1E, and the company now launched a new ad campaign, with the title "Experience a whole new world". In the description of the video you can see below (update: Sony removed the video and it is no longer available), Sony says that OLEDs are the future of TV, with extraordinary contrast, deep blacks and life-like color - coupled with a cutting-edge product design".

I'm not sure if an OLED really replaces the experience of seeing the earth from the moon, but there you have it. Sony's XGR-A1E costs the $3,999 for the 55" model and $5,499 for the 65" one.

In 2015 Audi demonstrated a luxury electric crossover concept car, the e-tron quattro, which sported OLED displays and OLED lighting in its frontlights and taillights. Audi is soon set to unveil its latest e-Tron concept, this time of a sportback edition, which also uses OLED tail lights.

Audi did not show the new car yet, but did release the video you see above demonstrating the OLED taillights, and also the image below.

Researchers from the Korea-based ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) produced the largest OLED panel to date (370 x 470 mm) that use graphene electrodes.

From the photo above (and image below) it seems that this panel is actually made from 12 small OLEDs - but it seems that the graphene deposition itself was done on the whole substrate.

Wisechip, the Taiwan-based PMOLED maker, demonstrated its new flexible and transparent PMOLED displays last week in a trade show in Germany. Embedded News TV interviewed the company's R&D manager and published the following video which also shows Wisechip's latest OLED prototypes.

On display at the trade show were two flexible OLEDs - a 1.8" monochrome 160x32 panel, a 1.36" monochrome 128x16 panel. Wisechip also has a 256 x 64 display. Wisechip also demonstrated a new transparent OLED for automotive applications and a round 1.07" 160x136 transparent PMOLED (this one was also on display last year). Wisechip's original plan was to start producing transparent displays towards the end of 2016, but apparently this is a bit delayed. We hear that the displays are nearing production though.

Last week we reported that Japan Display is developing flexible LCD displays. The company demonstrated a 5.5" FHD LCD that it brands as FULL ACTIVE FLEX, aiming to mass produced such displays that compete with flexible OLEDs in 2018.

JDI posted a presentation detailing the company's strategy, in which they showed the video you see above. This shows how flexible the display is - but it also shows that the LED backlighting unit is not flexible which seems to be a major flaw - I'm guessing JDI will want to change that, otherwise there's not much point in a flexible LCD...

Digital Trends posted this nice video showing LG's OLED technologies demonstrated a few weeks ago at CES 2017.

The video shows a commercial display built from tiled curved 77" OLED panels, LG's new Crystal Sound OLEDs which turn the slightly flexible OLED TV screen into speaker and a 55" transparent OLED (which has been demonstrated before).

Last week Samsung released several videos that showcase its latest Super AMOLED displays. The videos shows what looks to be an actual upcoming phone with almost no bezels on the sides and no physical buttons on the front:

This design has been suggested (leaked?) before for Samsung's upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S8. Samsung is expected to reveal the S8 soon, at the MWC 2017 event (February 27th). Of course this could just be a concept handset created for the AMOLED video, but it could also be Samsung's actual new phone that was added to the video by mistake (or not by mistake).

Yesterday we posted about LG's upcoming Wallpaper OLEDW7 TV launch at CES 2017, and today it turns out that LG Electronics is also launching a similar wallpaper TV for its commercial OLED signage range.

LG's model number for its Wallpaper Signage OLED TV is 55EJ5C-B (at least in the UK). This TV uses a 55" FHD panel (which is quite disappointing - I would have expected a 4K one!). LG already lists the TV in its UK and HK sites and also published the installation video above. MidWich.com also lists the price of this panel - £5,599 (almost $7,000 USD).
