Changhong demonstrates a wallpaper style OLED TV at IFA 2017

Chinese TV maker Changhong demonstrated a new wallpaper-style OLED TV at IFA 2017. The TV prototype supports 4K resolution and HDR.

Changhong actually has a model name for the 65" TV, 65Q5AZH. The company did not yet reveal this an an actual product nor give any launch estimates, but it did say it will also have a 55" model.

Panasonic demonstrate a 55" 4K transparent OLED TV prototype

Panasonic is demonstrating a new transparent 4K OLED TV prototype at the IFA 2017 exhibition. Panasonic did not reveal any commercialization plans or any technical details on this prototype.

Last year at IFA Panasonic demonstrated a new transparent display, showing several use cases for this technology - in wine refrigerators, in living room cabinets and more. Back then I wondered whether it was an OLED as reported - but now Panasonic specifically says this is an OLED panel. The 2016 prototype had an FHD resolution, so this year is certainly an improvement.

Sony asks LGD to double its OLED TV panel supply following high demand for Sony's OLED TVs

According to Business Korea, Sony is enjoying "explosive" demand for its OLED TVs since the beginning of Q2 2017, and the Japanese TV maker has reached out to LGD asking to double OLED TV shipments.

Sony will receive a total of 300,000 OLED TV panels from LGD in 2017, and it aims to order more than 600,000 panels per year starting in 2019 (once LGD can increase its OLED TV capacity). The Korean report suggested that Sony may assist LGD with an investment to secure the capacity.

Mercedes to introduce OLED taillights in its upcoming S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet cars

Mercedes-Benz will unveil its upcoming S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet cars at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. These new premium cars will sport OLED lighting - Mercedes released the teaser you see below.

Mercedes adopted red OLED panels, and each module includes 33 individually controlled OLED panels. It will be great to see these cars next month, hopefully the OLEDs will be used in all models (in Audi's case, the OLED Taillights are optional extras).

LG Display shows an automotive OLED taillight design

While LG Display has been demonstrating automotive OLED displays for a long time (based on its plastic flexible OLEDs, mostly) with plans to enter the market in 2018, its OLED lighting business unit has been pretty quiet in this front.

LG Electronics now published the video you see above that shows an OLED lighting automotive taillights, based on LGD flexible OLED lighting panels. Not a lot of details in this video besides showing a sample module - but it is great to see LG Display targeting automotive OLED lighting which could be the first major market to adopt OLED lighting technologies.

Wisechip explains the development effort behind its HF-TADF PMOLED

Last month PMOLED maker WiseChip demonstrated a Hyperfluoresence TADF PMOLED display in a trade show in Japan, following a collaboration with HF TADF developer Kyulux. Wisechip says it will bring its first HF-TADF PMOLEDs to the market by the end of 2017.

Kyulux today uploaded Wisechip's presentation from the TADF workshop. In this lecture Wisechip’s VP of R&D Engineering Division, Dr. York Tsai, gave a presentation that detailed the Hyperfluorescence-PMOLED development effort and the performance boost enabled by the new material.

Dubai Mall installs the world's largest OLED display ever using 820 55" OLED TV panels

A shopping mall in Dubai, simply called the Dubai Mall, unveiled the world's largest OLED installation. The huge OLED screen uses 820 55" OLED panels (made by LG Display) to create a 50 x 14 meters display made from 1.7 billion pixels.





This is actually not only the world's largest OLED display, it is also the world's largest HD video wall and the highest-resolution one. The display is placed on top of a large aquarium tank and was installed by Emaar Entertainment.

Wisechip shows its latest PMOLEDs at the TADF Workshop in Japan

Wisechip, the Taiwan-based PMOLED maker, demonstrated its latest display panels and prototypes at the TADF Workshop last week in Fukuoka, Japan. This was an impressive display and a great chance to experience the latest PMOLEDs displays from Wisechip.

So first up we have the company's transparent PMOLED. This is a 4.1" (106x37.9 mm) segmented T-OLED specifically aimed for automotive HUD applications. The display has 4 colors (red, orange, green and blue) and offers a typical brightness of 800 nits (max is 1,500 nits). According to Wisechip the display will soon hit the market for a specific automotive partner.

EU's PI-SCALE project can now produce 10 meter long OLED Lighting panels

In March 2016 the EU launched a new project, called PI-SCALE, that aims to create a European-wide pilot line which will enable companies of all sizes to quickly and cost effectively test and scale up their flexible OLED lighting concepts and turn them into market ready products.

PI-SCALE members started to produce sample panels - and can currently make long films up to 10 meters in size. You can see such sheets (cut to 1.8 meters) in the video above, taken at SID DisplayWeek.
