Samsung - we sold over 30 million Galaxy S and SII phones

Samsung announced that it has sold over 30 million Galaxy S and Galaxy S II phones worldwide. It was just a month ago that Samsung announced it has sold over 10 million SII phones, so we can assume that Galaxy S sales have reached almost 20 million units (and this phone is still on sale).

The Galaxy-S has a 1 Ghz processor and a large 4" Super-AMOLED display, while the Galaxy S II has a 4.3" WVGA Super AMOLED plus display, 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, NFC, Bluetooth 3 and HSPA+. It's only 8.49mm thick at its thinnest point.

Sony - the PlayStation Vita will go on sale February 22, 2012 in North America and Europe

Sony announced that the PSP Vita will ship in North America and Europe on February 22nd, 2012. The Vita will ship in Japan on December 17th 2011. Amazon.com also updated their Vita page with the correct release date. The will cost $249 for the Wi-Fi version and $299 for the 3G one).

The Vita features a 5" touch AMOLED display (960x544), a quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor and a quad-core PowerVR (SGX543MP4+) GPU (Sony says that it is as powerful as a PS3), Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and 3G (AT&T, optional). Gaming controls include dual analog sticks, motion controls and a multi-touch pad on the rear side.

Something big (and curved) is coming from Samsung...

Update 2: The Galaxy Nexus is now official - with a 4.65" Super AMOLED HD display. It isn't curved though as we hoped...

Update: Samsung and Google announced they are delaying the announcement of the new product. They said that this is not the right time "as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing"

Samsung is hosting an event on October 11th (during the CTIA Enterprise & Applications show in San Diego) - apparantly together with Google. They released a short teaser that towards the end shows a mysterious curved device:

There are speculations that this is the next Google phone (perhaps called Nexus Prime) - that will include a curved Super AMOLED HD display. We don't have a lot to wait for this one! Hopefully they won't fail us like Apple just did yesterday. Here's the full (30 seconds) teaser video:

Microsoft will no longer produce Zune players

Microsoft announced today that it will stop producing Zune players - which were never a big success. The second generation Zune-HD was actually considered a very good device - but it never managed to sell in big enough numbers for Microsoft. Back in March 2011 we reported that Microsoft decided to abandon this product line, so this isn't a surprise.

The Zune-HD was actually considered to be a good device but it wasn't a success for Microsoft. The flash player featured Wi-Fi, HD radio and video and a 3.3" 480x272 multi-touch AMOLED display. It is still shipping from Amazon if you're interested...

NEC shows an android notebook prototype with a 7" OLED display

NEC has unveiled a new thin (9.9mm) notebook prototype called MGX. It's an Android powered device, and the display is a 7" 1024x600 OLED touch panel. Other features include HSUPA, Wi-Fi and a two-axis design that allows folding the screen (360-degrees). The whole device weighs just 350g.

I think this is the first OLED device (even just a prototype) from NEC we've seen since the L1 phone with its small external PMOLED panel - from back in 2005...

Samsung's Galaxy S2 is now available for AT&T (for $200)

AT&T is finally offering Samsung's flagship Galaxy S2 smartphone - for $200 (with a 2-year contract). The Galaxy S2 is the successor to the Galaxy S. It has a 4.3" WVGA Super AMOLED plus display, 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, NFC, Bluetooth 3 and HSPA+. It's only 8.49mm thick at its thinnest point.

The Galaxy S2 is also available for Sprint (it's called Epic 4G Touch, has a 4.5" display and costs $199). You can buy it unlocked for $608.

Nokia starts shipping the N9

Nokia announced that they started shipping their N9 Meego smartphone. It will ship in several countries worldwide - but not in the US.

The N9 is Nokia's first Meego phone - and it sports a 3.9" AMOLED display (854x480, we're not sure if it's a CBD display), 16 to 64 GB memory, 1GB RAM, Bluetooth, NFC, Wi-Fi, compass and GPS. There's a 8mp F2.2 camera capable of 720p video. The phone is 'wrapped' in a polycarbonate shell and comes in three colors. Applications are Qt 4.7 compatible and HTML5 support in built in.

Samsung announces a Korean Galaxy S II variant with a Super AMOLED HD display

Samsung announced two new Galaxy SII variants - both with LTE, and both for the Korean market. The more interesting one is the Galaxy S II HD LTE which offers a 4.65" Super AMOLED HD display - offering 1280x720 resolution (316ppi, most likely with Pentile). The second phone is the Galaxy S II LTE which has a 4.5" 480 x 800 display (207ppi).

Beside the display, both phone feature LTE of course, a 1.5Ghz dual-core processor, 8mp camera (1080p video), 16GB of internal memory, Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC.

Samsung announced they sold 10 million Galaxy S II phones in 5 months

Samsung Electronics says that today they sold their 10 millionth Galaxy S2 smartphone. The S2 is the fastest selling phone ever for Samsung (the Star phone took 6 month to reach 10 million sales, and the Galaxy S took 7 months). The company also revealed that they sold 3.6 units in Korea, 3.4 units in Europe and 2.3 million in Asia. It just started selling in the US in the past few days...

Motorola preparing a Super-AMOLED phone according to new rumors

The rumors were true - Motorola unveiled the Droid RAZR with a 4.3" qHD Super AMOLED display...

There are some rumors surfacing that Motorola are working towards a new Android LTE phone with a 4.3" qHD (960x540) Super AMOLED display (this will be the first device to sport such a display if true!). Other features include 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8mp camera and Full-HD (1080p) video encoding. The new phone will be called the Spyder, or the Droid RAZR or perhaps Droid HD...

Interestingly, our own source told us a few days ago that Motorola will start using AMOLED displays in their new phones - so this gives some credit to this rumor. What's even more interesting, is that our source is the same one behind the new Apple iPhone 5 OLED rumor...
