The Korean Government to designate OLED as a national strategic technology

In April 2022, we reported that the Korean Government is considering designating OLED technology as a "national strategic technology", which means that companies will be given tax benefits, to encourage further investments and R&D in the OLED industry.

According to new reports to Korea, the government will unveil a new draft tax law tomorrow that will indeed include new benefits to OLED developers, as OLED will be regarded as a national strategic technology indeed. This will encourage companies to establish new OLED R&D activities and new production lines. The government is also also looking to add microLED and quantum dot display technologies as strategic technologies.

The MicroLED Industry Association to host a Perovskite microLED technology webinar

On March 27 the MicroLED Industry Association will host a private webinar on perovskite materials for the microLED industry. Perovskite materials hold great promise for the solar industry and in recent years we are seeing promising signs for the adoption of perovskites the display industry.

The MicroLED Industry Association to host an AR microLED technology webinar

On February 7th the MicroLED Industry Association will host a private webinar on microLED technologies for the AR market. The AR market is a very good segment for microLED developers, as it offers high performance requirements, relative microLED maturity and an excellent horizon.

The upcoming Seminar will feature four world-leading speakers, and will also be open to a Q&A session, to help increase microLED developers knowledge and involvement in the AR industry:

  • Karl Guttag: a display systems engineer, one of the most respected experts on near eye displays and HMD designs
  • Assaf Levy-Beeri: CEO at JoyaTeam, an optical design team focusing on AR solutions
  • Soon-gi Park: AR specialist at LetinAR, a Korea-based AR optical system developer
  • Reza Chaji: CEO at microLED microdisplay developer VueReal (and a microLED association member)

Reports suggest that Meta is in talks with Samsung and LG regarding the supply of OLED and microLED microdisplays

Reports from Korea suggest that Meta (Facebook) is in talks with both Samsung Display and LG Display, regarding the supply of OLED microdisplays and microLED microdisplays for its future AR and VR glasses.

According to the reports, dozens of executives from Meta have met with executives from LG Display and Samsung Display, and the discussions are still ongoing. According to other reports, Meta plans to use OLED displays in its upcoming VR glasses, and MicroLEDs in AR glasses that will hit the market at around 2026.

LG Display shows a 12" 100 PPI full-color stretchable microLED display

LG Display has demonstrated a 12" 100 PPI full-color stretchable MicroLED display. The display can stretch up to 20% (to create a 14" display).

The display is said to be "close to commercialization" - as it is highly flexible, durable, and reliable. LGD says that it is the world's first full-color high-resolution stretchable display that was ever produced. But we do know that companies have demonstrated stretchable OLED displays in the past, for example Samsung with its 13" stretchable display shown in 2021.

Samsung reports its Q3 2022 financial results

Samsung Electronics reported its financial results for Q3 2022, with its highest quarterly revenue ever (76.78 trillion Won, or $54 billion USD) and an operating profit of 10.85 trillion won ($7.7 billion USD), down 23% from the previous quarter.

Samsung Display saw record revenues (9.39 trillion Won) as demand increased for its OLED mobile panel business following the release of new flagship smartphones. The company expects to see continued strong demand for premium OLED displays.
