Google suggests reducing image size on idle devices to conserve power on OLED displays

Google filed an interesting patent in 2012, in which they suggest to reduce the image on a screen when the device is idle. The idea is that when the user is not active, the display size is slowly reduced, until it is invisible. The patent specifically says that this is useful on OLED displays - as it would save power and still present a somewhat useful image to the user.

Developer creates OLED-friendly black Google android apps

A modder developed a black-themed version of Google apps (he called this Black Google Apps) that is a much more battery friendly on OLED mobile phones. The application are not just "darker", they are inverted (see the image below).

This idea isn't new of course - when Microsoft developed the WP7 operation system they assumed most phones will sport OLED displays and this effected the user interface design.

Google to launch a tablet soon, will it have an OLED display?

Google's chairman Eric Shcmidt told a reporter that Google plans to market a tablet "of the highest quality" in the next 6 months. It may be that Google is simply planning a "marketing push" for Android tablets, but it's more likely that Google will launch their own branded Tablet - just like the Nexus range of phones.

If indeed they plan a high-quality product, it's quite possible that it will have an AMOLED display. Google's entire Nexus range of phones had AMOLED displays - the 3.7" WVGA OLED of the Nexus One, the 4" WVGA Super AMOLED of the Nexus S and the 4.65" HD Super AMOLED (1280x720) of the Galaxy Nexus. Samsung are already producing 7.7" Super AMOLED Plus displays, as used in the upcoming Galaxy Tab 7.7.

Something big (and curved) is coming from Samsung...

Update 2: The Galaxy Nexus is now official - with a 4.65" Super AMOLED HD display. It isn't curved though as we hoped...

Update: Samsung and Google announced they are delaying the announcement of the new product. They said that this is not the right time "as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing"

Samsung is hosting an event on October 11th (during the CTIA Enterprise & Applications show in San Diego) - apparantly together with Google. They released a short teaser that towards the end shows a mysterious curved device:

There are speculations that this is the next Google phone (perhaps called Nexus Prime) - that will include a curved Super AMOLED HD display. We don't have a lot to wait for this one! Hopefully they won't fail us like Apple just did yesterday. Here's the full (30 seconds) teaser video:

More rumors on the upcoming Super AMOLED HD displays

Update: Engadget says that Samsung will not confirm the rumor - saying that the information on these tweets came from an external source...

A few weeks we reported that there are rumors regarding a new Super AMOLED HD display coming from Samsung - featuring 720p (1280x720) resolution. It was rumored that this display will first appear in Google's upcoming Nexus 3 phone, and today we hear that Samsung Mobile Romania twitted about the upcoming Nexus S - and confirmed the Super AMOLED HD display.

Having such a display on a mobile phone seems highly unlikely. Samsung currently can't make such a high PPI AMOLED (unless they move to LITI, but this isn't expected anytime soon). Perhaps the Nexus 3 will actually be a tablet and not a phone? Or perhaps Samsung will surprise us all with a remarkable new AMOLED technology...
