Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) demonstrated two new OLED display prototypes, both based on the company's proprietary CAAC-IGZO (c-axis aligned crystalline In-Ga-Zn-O) backplane material.
First up is the world's smallest 8K display, a 8.3" OLED (1058 PPI) with a resolution of 7680x4320. The panel is based on a white OLED with color filter architecture.
In January 2018 LG Display unveiled its first 88-inch 8K (7680x4320) OLED panel, and today LG Electronics demonstrated its first TV that uses this panel, at the IFA 2018 trade show.
LG did not reveal the model number, price or release date of its to-be flagship OLED TV.
LG Display announced that it has developed the world's first 88-inch 8K (7680x4320) OLED display. LGD will demonstrate this at CES 2018 next week and it seems as if it aims to launch this as a product soon as it says this will expand its OLED product portfolio.
A couple of weeks ago it was reported that LGD indeed aims to focus on larger-area OLED TVs going forward. LG's current 77" OLEDs start at $9,999 (for the OLEDG7 model), and we can expect a 88" OLED to be much more expensive (a 88" TV has a 30% larger area than a 77", but yields will be lower and of course this is a high premium TV size).
Samsung Display announced it launched a new project (called EnDK) to develop the world's first 11K mobile display, that will achieve 2250 PPI(!). The Korean government will support this five-year project with a $26.5 million grant. Samsung is collaborating with 13 companies on this project, and they expect to show the first prototype by the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
This seems crazy at first for a mobile device - after all the human eye cannot physically distinguish a higher than 2K resolution in a mobile phone. But Samsung explains that this "super dimension" display will enable an "optical illusion" that will enable 3D images.
Researchers from Japan's Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) and Advanced Film Device developed a 81-inch 8Kx4K OLED display that is built from 36 13.5" flexible OLED panels that have transparent edges on two adjacent sides.
The transparent edges enabled the researchers to connect the tiles seamlessly - to create the world's largest OLED display ever developed.
According to C|Net, LG Display developed a 55" 8K (7680x4320, 160 PPI) OLED TV prototype panel, and the Korean company will show this prototype next month at CES 2015.
LG 55-inch FHD OLED TV
This panel, which has a total of 33.2 million pixel and a brightness of 500 nits, has over 20 display drivers ICs inside (apparently these were developed in collaboration with NVidia), and was already produced in early November. LG is actually planning to commercialize this display, even though many people will argue that it doesn't make much sense to have such a high resolution in a 55" display. A nice technical achievement by LGD in any case.
As we reported back in February, SEL and sharp unveiled a 13.3" 8K OLED prototype. This ultra high density (664 PPI!) display uses SEL's C-axis-aligned crystalline oxide semiconductor (CAAC-OS) backplane.
SEL's previous 13" CAAC-OS OLED prototype featured 326 PPI. But that lower-resolution panel was flexible. This new panel uses white OLEDs with color filters. SEL adopted micro cavities to narrow the wavelengths. The display features a 84% NTSC color gamut (rather low for an OLED). Each OLED pixel is driven by five transistors and one capacitor (5T+C) - there are almost 500 million pixel transistors in this display.
