Super AMOLED: introduction and market status - Page 25
The Samsung Galaxy S is now available unlocked for $900 (update: $690 on eBay)
Update: You can find cheaper Galaxy S unlocked phones on eBay - starting from $690.
If you don't want to wait for AT&T to release Samsung's Super-AMOLED Galaxy S, you can get it unlocked in the US for $899 (over at Amazon.com). Beside the 4" WVGA Super-AMOLED display, the Android Galaxy S has a 1 Ghz processor, Samsung's 'content Ecosystem' and Social Hub and can shoot HD video at 720p (with a 5mp camera).
CNet challenge: Are AMOLED displays better than LCDs?
CNet has posted an interesting video in which they test whether AMOLED displays are better than LCDs. The conclusions? The AMOLED provide better colors, but also less accurate ones. They also suffer under sunlight (although the new Super-AMOLEDs are quite good). See for yourself: (update: the video is no longer available)
AT&T to offer the Galaxy S "Captivate" in the coming months
AT&T announced that they will start shipping the Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) in the coming months. The Android v2.1 phone has a 4" WVGA 800 X 480 Super-AMOLED display, 1 Ghz processor and can shoot HD video at 720p (with a 5mp camera).
Samsung Electronics to get Super-AMOLED exclusively for the next 18 months
Engadget posted an interesting preview on the Samsung Galaxy S. The most interesting bit is that they claim that Samsung will not sell Super-AMOLED displays to other companies for the next 18 months. Samsung can't meet demand as it is, so this make sense.
Engadget are very happy with the display (which is a 4" WVGA 800 X 480). It has terrific color and vibrancy. "this is one of the finest displays you can hope to
lay eyes on". Even in direct sunlight it remains usable - as long as you face it directly. If you view it from an angle, it suffers dramatically. The phone itself is impressive, but they say it's not "polished" enough.
The Samsung Galaxy Beam projector-phone will start shipping in July
Samsung say that the Galaxy Beam will launch on July, in Singapore (a European and Asian launch will follow soon afterwards). The Galaxy Beam has a 3.7" Super-AMOLED, WVGA DLP pico-projector, Android v2.1, Wi-Fi, 8mp camera, A-GPS, FM radio and HD video recording.
Samsung preparing a Galaxy S Pro phone with WiMax support?
Update: This phone is now official, and called the Epic 4G.
There are reports that Samsung is working on a new WiMAX phone, the Galaxy-S Pro. The "original" Galaxy-S has a Super-AMOLED display, so we can assume that this one has the same display.
More Samsung Tablet rumors: to be called Galaxy Tape, and have a Super AMOLED
Update: A Samsung Executive (J.K. Shin, president of Samsung's mobile communications division) has confirmed that Samsung are working on a table, to be called Galaxy Tab, to be released no later than 3Q 2010.
We have some fresh rumors about Samsung's upcoming Tablet: according to a Vietnamese site, it will be named Galaxy Tape (and not tab), and indeed come with a 7" Super-AMOLED. Other features include a 1.2Ghz A8 processor, Android 2.2, 16GB of internal memory and a microSD slot. It'll weigh 370 grams. Galaxy Tape sounds weird to me, but if these are the true specs, this is one exciting gadget...
Direct sunlight: Pixel Qi compared to an AMOLED display
Here's an interesting comparison, a Pixel-Qi transflective LCD technology (with a touch layer) against the Google Nexus-One AMOLED display. The Pixel-Qi behaves much better than the AMOLED display... It'll be interesting to see how it compares to the new Super-AMOLED displays.
AUO has developed a 2.4" transparent AMOLED with in-cell multi-touch function
AUO has developed a new 2.4" transparent AMOLED that has an in-cell touch panel - they say it's the world's first. They target it for GPS applications mainly (where users could capture their actual locations for the navigation system to recognize, and make use of the convenient touchscreen interface to find their ways easily). AUO will show this new display at Display Taiwan 2010.
It's interesting to see how AUO's in-cell touch panel compares to Samsung's Super-AMOLED (which also has a touch-panel, but is not transparent).
Samsung Galaxy Tab revealed. Does it have a 7" Super-AMOLED?
Samsung has revealed the Galaxy Tab - a 7" tablet that runs on Android with the TouchWiz UI. This tablet was leaked a while back (and referred to as the S-Pad), and it was said to be using a Super-AMOLED display. We still don't know the display type of the Galaxy Tab. We can only hope for an OLED...
