Samsung unveils the Galaxy S4, with a 5" Full-HD (441 PPI) Super AMOLED display
Samsung unveiled their new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4. As expected, it sports a 4.99" Full-HD (1920x1080, 441 PPI) Super AMOLED display behind a Corning Gorilla Glass 3. This phone will launch towards the end of April worldwide (on 327 carriers in 155 countries). The S4 seems to be more of an upgrade to the S3 than a revolutionary new handset.
According to previous reports, Samsung Display started producing these 5" Full-HD AMOLED panels in February at a rate of 3 million units per moth (this will grow to almost 10 million monthly units in coming months). The S3 is Samsung's best selling and fastest selling smartphone, and obviously the company hopes that the S4 will sell even better.
Blackberry announces their first AMOLED phone, the Q10
Blackberry announced their first BB10 devices today, the Z10 and Q10. The latter is Blackberry's first keyboard BB10 device - and the company's first OLED product, too. It sports a square 3.2" 720x720 (330 ppi) Super AMOLED display, LTE, 1.5Ghz dual-core CPU and 2GB of RAM. We still do not know the Q10 release date or price.
Last year in June we reported on rumors that suggested that the new QWERTY BB10 device will indeed sport such an OLED display. It was also reported that the non-keyboard device will have a 4.65" AMOLED but this is not true (the Z10 has a 4.2" 1280 x 768 356ppi LCD).
Samsung sold over a million Note II phones in Korea, on track to sell 10 million units by Q1 2013
Back in November 2012 Samsung announced that they sold over 5 million Galaxy Note II phones worldwide in less than 3 months, and now we hear that the company sold over one million Note II phones in South Korea alone. Samsung is on track to sell 10 million units by the end of Q1 2013, just four or five months since launching the phone in September 2012. This is a great success for Samsung.
The Note II has a 5.5" HD Super AMOLED display (1280x720, non-Pentile), a quad-core 1.6Ghz processor and a large 3,100mAh battery. It's only 9.4mm thick. It's available for AT&T ($250), and also unlocked in the US for $775 (international version).
Verizon's Stratosphere II is now available for free (with a contract)
Verizon are now offering the Stratosphere II smartphone for free with a two-year contract. Samsung's Stratosphere II is a QWERTY slider Android 4.0 smartphone that features a 4" Super AMOLED display, a 1.2 Ghz dual-core CPU, LTE and NFC.
Samsung sold over 5 million Galaxy Note II phones in less than 3 months
Samsung announced that they sold over 5 million Galaxy Note II phones. In the beginning of November they announced 3 million units sold - so it means they sold 2 million in less than a month. The Note II has a 5.5" HD Super AMOLED display (1280x720, non-Pentile), a quad-core 1.6Ghz processor and a large 3,100mAh battery. It's only 9.4mm thick.
The Note 2 started shipping in September 2012. It's available for AT&T ($250), and also unlocked in the US for $775 (international version).
The Galaxy S3 mini is now shipping, unlocked for $420
Samsung's Galaxy S3 mini is now shipping in Europe, and it's available in the US unlocked for $420. The S3 mini is an Android v4.1 phone that features a 4" WVGA Super AMOLED display, 1Ghz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, 16 GB of flash storage (and a microSD slot), NFC and a 5mp camera (720p video).
Samsung to unveil a 4.99" Full-HD Super AMOLED panel at CES 2013
Last week we reported that Samsung decided to use OLED technology in its upcoming Full-HD mobile phone display, and today we hear that Samsung plans to unveil this panel at CES 2013 (January 8-11). The panel's size is 4.99" which means 441 PPI (at 1920x1080). Back in October it was reported that Samsung managed to reach 400 PPI using a modified FMM technology.
A 4.99" display is quite larger than the S3 (4.8") and it's not clear whether this will be used in the upcoming S4 phone (I think there's a limit to the size of Samsung's main flagship smartphone). The Note II has a 5.5" display, so the new panel is somewhat between those two phones. Samsung may be able to put this larger display into a case with the same as as the S3 one, by narrowing the bezel and perhaps removing the home button.
Samsung sold over 30 million Galaxy S3 phones
Samsung announced it has sold over 30 million Galaxy S3 phones. The S3 is probably Samsung's best selling smartphone ever (in June Samsung said it sold over 28 million S2 phones, so it's probably close - but the S3 will surely overtake the S2 in sales if it didn't already).
Samsung's Galaxy S3 has a 4.8" 1280x720 HD Super AMOLED (306 PPI, with Pentile), a quad-core 1.4Ghz CPU (dual-core 1.5Ghz in the US models), 1GB of RAM (2GB in the US models) and an 8 mp camera (1080p video). The phone weighs 133 grams and is only 8.6 mm thick. In the US it costs around $150 with a contract and is being offered by AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. You can also get it unlocked for $799.
Samsung sold 3 million Galaxy II phones in 37 days
Samsung announced that they sold over 3 million Galaxy Note II phones - only 37 days after its release. This is three times faster than the previous Galaxy Note (which sold over 10 million units in 9 months). The Note II has a 5.5" HD Super AMOLED display (1280x720, non-Pentile), a quad-core 1.6Ghz processor and a large 3,100mAh battery. The Note II is only 9.4mm thick.
The Note 2 started shipping in September 2012. It is available unlocked in the US for $775 (international version), and it's also being rolled out by AT&T and others.
Will the upcoming Google Nexus 10 table sport a 10.1" Super AMOLED display?
Update: the Nexus 10 is official, and it uses a PLS LCD...
Google is planning to unveil new products on October 29th, and new rumors suggest that this will be a samsung-made Nexus 10 tablet, and it will sport a 10.1-inch Super AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2560Ã1600 (which means 298.9 ppi). If true, this will be the largest AMOLED panel produced by Samsung ever. Hopefully we'll know soon!
The rest of the specification, according to the leak: a 1.7Ghz dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of memory and no expansion slot.
