Sharp says OLED TVs won't be a threat for LCD 'for at least a decade'
Sharp's Miyuki Nakayama : "Organic EL screens like that just aren't a threat to LCD and they won't be for at least another decade. The picture quality is superb, but the screens don't last long and they can't easily be made bigger."
Sharp has "big plans" for LCD TV, and also smaller embedded LCD displays.

Sharp to launch advanced LCDs for mobile devices, pitting it against OLED displays
Sharp it has developed advanced LCD panels that would offer sharper moving images on portable devices such as mobile phones, pitting it against OLED displays. The new panels have a response speed three times as fast as its conventional panels and the world's highest contrast ratio for 2-inch LCDs used in mobile devices, Sharp said.
The Osaka-based company plans to make a sample shipment of the new liquid crystal display (LCD) panels by the end of the year for cellphones and aims for ¥100 billion ($836 million) in sales from the new products in the year ending March 2009.
Comparative OLED displays, which are also known for high-contrast ratios and high response speeds, could cost twice or three times as much as conventional LCD displays, it said.
Cambridge Display Technology Announces Financial Results for Second Quarter 2006
Revenues in the quarter were $2.7 million, which was the same as the $2.7 million reported for the corresponding period in 2005. The majority of revenues in Q2 2006 arose in the License Fees and Royalties category.
CEO Dr. David Fyfe commented: "In the second quarter we were delighted to see Sharp reveal their work on high resolution PLED displays at the SID conference in June. At the same conference we were able to show the world's first roll printed OLED display, produced in co-operation with Toppan Printing. This printing technology could become very important in future for lower cost display production." "We have seen an encouraging number of new commercial applications utilizing our technology, from digital radios and MP3 players to diving computers."
