Samsung Display to develop an innovative OLED display solution for Ferrari's future cars

Samsung Display signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Ferrari to develop a display solution for implementation in Ferrari’s next-generation models.

Samsung Display will develop a bespoke 'innovative automotive display solution' based on its OLED display. The company did not say much more - it will be interesting to see what kind of display will SDC develop for Ferrari.

The US ITC launches a formal investigation against BOE regarding Samsung's OLED patents

According to Business Korea, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) launched a investigation to check whether BOE infringes Samsung's OLED patents. This is a second step in Samsung's' efforts to ban BOE's AMOLED panels in the US, following a request to ban aftermarket AMOLED panels in the US.

This will be interesting to watch, especially as BOE aims to become a supplier for Apple's future iPhone displays.

Samsung Display to invest $3.1 billion to convert an LCD fab to an IT 8.5-Gen AMOLED line

In August 2022, Samsung Display announced that the company decided to build a 8-Gen (2200x2500 mm) production line, which will begin production in 2024. The company now updated that it will convert an existing LCD line in Asan, South Chungcheong province, Korea - and the total cost of the project is $3.1 billion. Samsung Display received government subsidy for this project.

Samsung says that the new production line will enable it to more than double its AMOLED tablet panel production. The company acknowledges the drop in demand for displays in general, but the company expects that demand for premium mid-sized panels will keep increasing.

Omdia: small-size AMOLED display shipments down 6% in 2022

Omdia says that small-size (under 9") AMOLED display shipments dropped 6% in 2022 to 762 million units, due to lower demand for smartphones.

Samsung remains the leading AMOLED maker, with a 56% market share (by unit), down from 61% in 2021, with BOE in the second plane (12%) and LG Display in the third place (11%). The next producers by shipments are Visionox and Everdisplay.

Samsung launches a website that tells you whether your smartphone has an OLED made by SDC

Samsung Display launched a new web site, called OLED Finder, in which you can choose your phone model to see whether it uses an OLED produced by Samsung Display.

This is a marketing play by SDC, that aims to establish the superiority of Samsung's own OLED panels, over competing panels made by LGD, BOE, Visionox, etc. The website does not include all phones though that use OLED displays - for example it does not include any of Apple's iPhones.

Rtings.com burn-in tests show Samsung's QD-OLEDs suffer from worse burn-in compared to LG's WOLEDs

Review web site Rtings.com has performed an extensive accelerated longevity test for over three months, testing the latest QD-OLED and WOLED TVs.y

Rtings reports that both QD-OLED displays (Samsung S95B OLED and the Sony A95K) showed signs of image retention, and it seems in general that the QD-OLED displays suffer from worse problems compared to LG's WOLED. Some of Sony's WOLED TVs also showed signs of image retention.

Japan lifts its ban on the sale of several high-purity materials to South Korea

In 2019, following tensions between Japan and Korea, Japan's government decided to restrict some material exports to South Korea, including fluorinated polyimide, resist and high-purity hydrogen fluoride, materials required for OLED production.

The relations between the two countries are warming up now, and a few days ago the Japanese government decided to lift those restrictions, and the sale of these materials to Korean companies are now possible.

DSCC says demand for smartphone and TV OLED displays will decline by 24% in the next quarter

DSCC says that OLED panel revenues were $12.6 billion in Q4 2022, down 3% from Q4 2021. Shipments declined by 7% compared to last year.

For the full year 2022, revenues reached $41.7 billion, a 1% decrease from 2021. AMOLED for smartphones shipments (units) decreased by 1%, while OLED TV panel shipments decreased by 9%. Some OLED segments grew in 2022 - AR/RV, automotive, monitors, and tablets.
