Interview with Dr. Ulrich Eisele, OSRAM's OLED unit chief

OSRAM is one of the leading companies developing (and marketing) OLED lighting. Dr. Ulrich Eisele, head of OSRAM's OLED unit, was kind enough to answer a few questions we had for him regarding OSRAM's OLED program:

Q: You recently presented a new flexible OLED that features 32 lm/W. Can you us some more information on this panel?

A: The outstanding feature of the flexible OLED shown is that the production is based on well-tried OSRAM OLED processes. The production line is located in Regensburg (Bavaria), so we can benefit from our local expertise.

OSRAM developed the world's most efficient flexible OLED lighting panel (32 lm/W)

OSRAM announced that they developed a new flexible OLED with an efficiency of 32 lm/W - which makes is the world's most efficient OLED lighting panel (according to OSRAM). The new panel is made on a thin steel foil with a thickness of approximately 100 micrometers - like a sheet of paper. OSRAM developed a new electrode design for this top-emitter OLED panel, which brightness is fixed at 1,000 cd/m².

OSRAM's flexible OLED research was conducted as part of the TOPAS 2012 project - the same project in which OSRAM developed the 87 lm/W white OLED panel back in June.

Qube - an OLED installation with over 1400 OSRAM Orbeos panels

Update: it turns out that Kaneka's installation at the Milano art show in April 2011 used 2,500 OLED lighting panels - which makes it the largest OLED lighting insatllation ever, and makes OSRAM's Qube pale in comparison... Thanks for tip Tomoko!

OSRAM unveiled a beautiful new OLED installation at the Qubique Berlin Tempelhof 2011 exhibition, which uses over 1,400 OSRAM round Orbeos panels. It was designed by Labme, OSRAM's new open source OLED lighting design platform.

I think this is the largest OLED lighting installation ever produced, replacing Philip's Living Shapes OLED wall installation which had 1,152 Lumiblade panels. But the amount of panels is still small compared to Mitsubishi's 6-meter OLED GeoGlobe which uses 10,362 PMOLED displays. Anyway, here's a nice photo of the Qube in the making:

WAC Lighting's SOL OLED chandelier finally shipping - for $9,995

WAC Lighting announced their SOL OLED chandelier back in May 2010, and finally that lamp is shipping. The company used that period to refine the product and upgrade the Orbeos OLED panels (to the new models which are brighter and sport better CRI).

The SOL costs $9,995, and is available through over a dozen lighting shops in the US and Canada. The chandelier is crafted of aluminum and finished in Black Nickel. It is 18.5 inches in diameter and only 2.2 inches tall. The overall height of the chandelier, with supporting metal rod, is 12.25 40 inches tall.

OSRAM Dance - a new Orbeos OLED lighting based module

OSRAM is introducing its first OLED module - the OLED Dance. The Dance includes one round OLED Orbeos panel in a round case and can be connected via its 2.6mm DC plug. The idea is this will can be used quickly (compared to just the bare Orbeos panel) - and so experimentation will be easier.

The module's diameter is 112 mm, and the OLED itself is 79 mm. The thickness of the module is 6.8mm. Here's our hands on review of the Orbeos panel.

OSRAM Airabesc OLED lamp - video introduction

Just after announcing their new OLED production line inauguration, OSRAM released a nice video introducing their OLED technology - and the Airabesc OLED lamp:

The Airabesc is hand-made from premium materials and provides "warm atmospheric light". The lamp length is 81cm, the width is 30cm and the height is 10cm. It contains 11 ORBEOS (RMW-046)rectangle panels and 6 LEDs (OSLON LCW CQ7P.CC). The power consumption is about 16W. It was supposed to start shipping in July, we're not sure if OSRAM are indeed shipping it now.

OSRAM's new OLED lighting pilot production line is now on line

OSRAM announced that they have launched their new OLED lighting pilot production line in Regensburg, Germany. The company says that they invested about 20 million euros on this project so far (originally they estimated that the total investment in the research and production center at Regensburg will reach 50 million euros).

OSRAM says that the new pilot production line will enable them to double the brightness of the OLEDs and to enhance the durability (they probably mean Lifetime) and efficiency. It will also enable them to produce transparent OLEDs, although they haven't announced any such product yet. OSRAM further says that when the expansion of the production center is complete, manufacturing costs are expected to decline by 90%!
