OLED lighting developer OLEDWorks announced that it has developed a high-performance multi-stack OLED microdisplay technology. Next week at SID Displayweek OLEDWorks will present the technology, and results from 3, 4 and 5-stack microdisplay formulations.
OLEDWorks explains that it has realized its multi-stack OLED lighting technology - and the results are "exceptional". The company says that combined wit its unique and cost-effective manufacturing technology, microdisplays based on this new technology could combine high brightness, long lifetimes, exceptional power efficiencies - all at a low manufacturing cost.
This is a very surprising move by OLEDWorks. It is yet to be seen whether the company actually aims to start making microdisplays and join this market which is starting to get very crowded, or whether it aims to license the technology for display makers.
Earlier this year Kopin announced that the company developed a new double-stack OLED architecture that enables brighter microdisplays with longer lifetime.
OLEDWorks was established in July 2010 by former Kodak OLED business experts and has become one of the OLED lighting leaders. In 2015 OLEDWorks acquired Philips' OLED lighting business. The company is now one of the leading OLED lighting producers, offering flexible and rigid panels, for the general lighting, commercial and automotive markets.
