Apple in talks with Samsung to use OLED displays on the iPad 3?
Tim Cook (Apple's COO and acting CEO) has visited South Korea last week, and there are reports that he discussed using Samsung's AMOLED displays for the iPad 3. According to the reports, the iPad 3 will launch towards the end of 2011 (by then Samsung's Gen-5.5 plant will have a 48,000 monthly substrate capacity), and Apple offered an advance payment for the displays.
These are just rumors currently (A SMD spokesperson said "he had not heard of such discussions with Apple"). But this is the first time that it's at least plausible for Apple to use OLEDs as up until today Samsung's capacity was simply not enough. Back in October 2010 it was rumored that Samsung sold all of their 2011 AMOLED capacity to Apple.
Samsung says no AMOLED tablet in 2011
During Samsung Electronic's conference call, the company said they will not release an AMOLED tablet in 2011. Samsung already unveiled 7" Super AMOLED prototypes in November 2010 and we had hopes they'll begin making those displays soon. It seems we'll have to wait till 2012 for an AMOLED tablet...
Samsung Galaxy S2 and Tab 2 specs and a new 4" 3D display
Samsung's Galaxy S2, the successor to the popular Galaxy S is now official -and it has a 4.3" Super AMOLED plus display, 1Ghz dual-core processor, NFC, Bluetooth 3 and HSPA+.
According to reports, the display offers 800x480 (WVGA) resolution - the same as the Galaxy S' Super-AMOLED which is smaller at 4". This is rather strange...
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 video leaked - to have a 2048x1200 7" Super-AMOLED display?
Update: The Galaxy Tab 2 is now official, here's more details along with the new Galaxy S2 phone.
Update: We understand that Samsung wants to introduce the Galaxy Tab 2 soon, and it's not clear whether they'll be able to actually deliver 7" Super-AMOLED displays in time - some say that it will use an LCD like the original Tab. It's not clear also whether this video is real or is this a fake...
We found a "leaked" video announcing the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. The leaked specs include a 7" 2048x1200 Super-AMOLED display (which is probably a Super AMOLED Plus, really, because of that resolution). Samsung unveiled a 7" Super-AMOLED in a tablet prototype back in November 2010, so this isn't a huge surprise. Here's the video:
Samsung unveils their 7" Super-AMOLED display in a Galaxy-Tab prototype
As we reported a few days ago, Samsung is showing a new 7" Super-AMOLED display. Interestingly, they are showing it in a Galaxy-Tab prototype. But this isn't surprising: Samsung already said that they wanted to use an AMOLED, but couldn't do so because they can't make enough, and they also said that they plan to expand the Galaxy-Tab line with AMOLED-using tablets in 2011.
The new 7" panel has a WSVGA (1024 x 600) resolution (the same as in the current tab). In addition to the new 7" panel, Samsung is also showing a 4.5" panel aimed for mobile phones.
Samsung to announce a 7" Super-AMOLED panel next week, start producing them in mid 2011
Samsung will unveil a new 7" Super-AMOLED panel next week at the FPD International exhibition (November 10th). The new panel will offer 1200x600 resolution and will be available in mid-2011. Samsung will use their upcoming 5.5-Gen AMOLED plant to produce those panels - so there shouldn't be any supply issues (the new production plant will boost Samsung's AMOLED capacity ten fold, to 30 million displays a month).
Obviously such a 7" Super-AMOLED panel will be a perfect fit to Samsung next-gen Galaxy-Tab. Samsung already said that they wanted to use an AMOLED, but couldn't do so because they can't make enough. They also said that they plan to expand the Galaxy-Tab line with AMOLED-using tablets in 2011. So everything falls into place...
New Samsung Tablet rumors: 7" and 10", but both will use LCD displays
The Samsung-Tab (or Galaxy Tab) tablet computer rumors continue. Today a Korean site claimed that Samsung will announce their tablet computer at IFA 2010 (September 3rd). It will come in two versions: 7" and 10". Both will be using an LCD display, not a Super-AMOLED.
I guess we'll have to wait for official news from Samsung. But we know that they are facing a shortage of AMOLED displays and they won't be able to make a large number of 7" AMOLED panels - so going with an LCD display, at least for now makes sense.
Samsung to introduce the Super-AMOLED 7" tablet next month?
There are reports that Samsung plans to introduce their Super-AMOLED 7" tablet computer (the S-Tab, or the Galaxy-Tab, we don't know yet) next month at IFA 2010, which will take begin on September 3rd, in Berlin.
Reuters say that Samsung is set to launch their 7" tablet in this quarter
It's been a while since we heard some new rumors about Samsung's upcoming tablet computer. According to a story on Reuters today, Samsung will launch the tablet during this quarter - and it will have a 7" display (no word whether it's a Super-AMOLED or LCD) and will run Google's Android OS. According to the story, LG also plans to introduce Android tablets devices this year.
Build your own linux tablet with a 4.4" OLED display
Liquidware (an open-source electronics firm) has released a kit that can be used to make a linux tablet with a 4.3" (480x272) OLED touch display. The kit includes a BeagelBoard Rev C4 board (with a 720Mhz ARM Cortex-A8 OMAP CPU), 20mm speaker, SD slot (it comes with a 4GB card), Wi-Fi, mini USB port and a battery.
So you won't get a real tablet - it's very thick, and not very pretty - but you can play videos and access the web. And it costs just $393. Here's a short video on the kit:
