MagnaChip shipped over 160 million AMOLED driver ICs since 2007
MagnaChip announced that since 2007 it has shipped over 160 million AMOLED driver ICs. Most of these ICs went to smartphones, but MagnaChip says they also shipped drivers to digital cameras and tablets. The company's latest AMOLED drivers target the VR headset and automotive markets.
MagnaChip says the company has a unique proprietary foundry model. This model allows MagnaChip to apply its own unique AMOLED process patents as well as other intellectual property, proprietary process design kits and custom design-flow methodologies using internal and external foundries. MagnaChip's technology current uses 55-nm process nodes, and is developing sub 55-nm processes.
IDTechEx sees the automotive OLED market at around $500 million in 2018
According to IDTechEx, the market for printed and flexible electronics in the automotive industry will grow from around $400 million in 2016 to over $5.5 billion in 2026. The market will be driven mostly by OLED technologies and in-mould electronics.
If we look at OLED specifically, the OLED automobile market will grow from around $150 million in 2016 to about $500 million in 2018. The OLED lighting market will still be small - only around $25 million in 2018. OLED displays will of course be much more popular.
Audi to use OLED taillights in the 2016 TT RS coupe
Audi has yet to unveil the 2016 Audi TT RS coupe, but according to new reports the car will use OLED taillights. The Audi TT RS is a high-end car but is serially produced.
In fact, if this report is true, the 2016 TT RS will be the first serial-produced car with OLED lighting. In September 2015 BMW announced that they are starting to produce the M4 GTS at very limited quantities - and this car has OLED lighting too. But only 700 such cars will be produced.
Pioneer demonstrates a transparent OLED automotive brake light
Pioneer is demonstrating a very nice looking transparent OLED automotive brake system. The idea is to embed this unit in the vehicle's rear window - so it is transparent and allows for a greater field of view, but when you press the brakes it emits a bright red light:
The idea of embedding an OLED in the rear window is not new, but this is a nice implementation by Pioneer.
LG demonstrates a 12.3" FHD flexible OLED for automotive applications
In July 2014 LG Display announced its intention to enter the OLED automotive display market, with flexible and transparent OLED solutions. Now the company demonstrates new 12.3" Full-HD Flexible OLED panels especially for the automotive market:
Back in 2014 LGD said they already signed contracts with several German automobile makers - it'll be interesting to see how soon will such display be adopted in commercial cars.

LG's OLED lighting business is now part of LG Display
In October 2015, LG Chem announced that it has sold its OLED lighting business to LG Display, for $135 million USD. LG decided to consolidate all OLED production under LG Display - which will hopefully enable LG to advance OLED lighting more quickly - and at a lower cost.
Today it was announced that the deal has completed, and the OLED lighting business is now part of LG Display. According to reports from Korea, going forward LGD will focus on automotive lighting - but talking to LG they clarify that they will focus on both general lighting and automotive lighting.
OSRAM announces a five-year €2 billion R&D drive
OSRAM Announced a new five-year strategic plan that includes a €2 billion investment in current and future lighting applications - including lasers, LEDs and OLEDs for automobiles.
OSRAM says that their automotive OLED lighting panels will enter mass production in early 2016. OSRAM is the OLED supplier of BMW's M4 GTS taillights. The M4 GTS will enter limited-edition (700 units) production and may be considered the first commercial car with OLED lighting.
Stanley Electric demonstrates an OLED tail light prototype
Japan-based Stanley Electric developed an OLED tail light prototype, and demonstrated it at the Tokyo Motor show. The company aim to commercialize such a tail lamp by 2020.
When the lamp is off, it is almost transparent it shows the chrome-plated reflective plate - the idea is that when it is not in use it looks similar to other chrome-plated vehicle parts. We do not know who provides the red OLEDs used in this prototype.
