LG Display announced that it will invest $1 billion to increase its OLED module fab capacity in Vietnam's Hai Phong Economic Zone. This will bring LGD's total investment in Vietnam to date to $5.65 billion.

LG Display first built its Hai Phong facility in 2016, and it then expanded capacity several times. The last capacity increase was announced in 2021.

Yesterday we reported that Samsung Display aims to increase its small-sized and mid-sized AMOLED panels production in 2025 by 10.25% to 475 million panels. It was understood that Samsung hopes to sell more foldable OLED panels and tablet OLED panels.

Today we hear another report that Samsung Display's capacity is totally booked, and the company cannot supply enough smartphone OLED to Samsung Electronics. It is said that Samsung Electronics will order some AMOLED smartphone displays from Tianma to be used in its low-end ranges, the Galaxy M and Galaxy F smartphones.

China-based AMOLED producer Everdisplay is constructing a new 6-Gen production line in Shanghai, an expansion of its existing fab. The company's original plan was to start mass production in December 2024, but it now announced it will delay this and mass production is now only expected in december 2025. This is the second delay of this project.

Everdisplay says that the reason for the delay is that the company wishes to upgrade the line to the latest OLED technologies, such as LTPO backplanes, Tandem stack architecture and a hybrid platform (which means rigid OLEDs with TFE encapsulation and a glass backplane).

According to a report from Korea Samsung Display aims to increase its small-sized and mid-sized AMOLED panels production in 2025 by 10.25% compared to its 2024 production (or 475 million panels up from 432 million panels).

Of course SDC's production plans depend on market demand, but it seems as if the company believes the OLED market is set to grow or that the company aims to grab a larger share of the market. SDC mostly aims to increase production of IT panels (laptops and tablet displays) and foldable smartphone OLED panels.

LG Electronics introduced a new showcase for its automotive display technologies, the Digital Cockpit gamma. This concept demonstrator is equipped with LG’s most sophisticated vehicle technologies and features three modular solutions: the Vision Display, Intelligent Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and Connectivity & Content.

The Vision Display concept utilizes LGD's latest OLED displays to "adapt seamlessly to dynamic environments". As part of this concept, LGD includes a 12.3" transparent OLED display, and a 14.2" rollable flexible OLED that can be retracted when not in use.

Towards the end of 2023, BOE officially announced its plans for a 8.6-Gen flexible LTPO AMOLED line in Chengdu. The agreement with Chengdu's local government was signed in early 2024, and in April BOE announced it is starting to construct the new fab. A few weeks ago BOE said it finished the construction of the main outer structure in this project, and that the company is on track to finish the fab by May 2026, with mass production expected by October 2026 - and full production in 2029.

According to reports, Huawei is enjoying high demand for its AMOLED smartphones in 2024, and it is expected to order 61 million AMOLED panels by the end of the year - up 81% over 2023 (33.7 million).

Huawei suffered from US sanctions in 2019 that drastically decreased its smartphone sales, but in 2023 it has returned to the smartphone market in force, and now it is enjoying very high demand for its smartphones.

According to reports, based on information found on a parts database, Samsung Electronics is getting ready to launch a 83-inch QD-OLED TV in 2025. The 83-inch panel will be introduced in the 2025 QD83S9F TV, and Samsung us likely to use both WOLED and QD-OLED panels in this TVs as was done in the 2024 S90D.

This is interesting news. Samsung's QD-OLED technology is under pressure and it is not clear whether Samsung intends to continue investing in it, and expanding production capacity. It seemed as if SDC is mostly focused on gaming monitors, but perhaps now it is also expanding its TV panel range, which is a welcome change.

BOE technology announced that it developed a new under-the-display OLED camera solution, to enable full-screen smartphone OLED displays with higher quality cameras than before. The company held a ceremony together with ZTE's Nubia and Red Magic smartphone brands, saying that it will supply the display and camera solutions to flagship smartphones from these two brands soon, the Nubia Z70 Ultra and the Red Magic 10 Pro.

BOE says that the new AMOLED displays adopt several innovative technologies, such as SIP ultra-narrow bezels, COP packaging - and the new under-the-OLED camera. The new technology achieves a full 430 PPI resolution for the OLED display including in the camera area, and the smartphones will offer a 95.3% screen-to-body ratio (as there's no notch or punch-hole). 

Samsung Display is progressing as planned with its  8.6-Gen AMOLED production line. The company recently completed the installation of all major equipment in the new line, and mass production is still expected to begin in 2026.

Samsung Display is now focusing on testing, calibrating and improving all process steps, as the new fab includes new technologies that haven't been deployed before in OLED production.
