Coherent launches a new 150 W infrared industrial femtosecond laser for large OLED display glass cutting

Coherent has launched a new Monaco infrared industrial femtosecond laser configuration with 150 W of output power. The company says that the new laser is ideal for cutting of large OLED display glass.

The OLED industry is now entering the IT display market (tablets, laptops and monitors) and this accelerates the demand for laser tools with higher output power that can process larger glass sheets than those currently used in smartphones and wearables. Coherent says that the new Monaco 1035-150-150 outputs more than double the power and pulse energy of existing configurations, enabling high-precision cutting of large glass panels in very high volumes to produce large OLED screens with perfect assembly fit in next-generation IT devices. Coherent says that its new laser is the smallest femtosecond laser of its kind on the market and the easiest to integrate into laser tools.

UDC signed an OLED material evaluation agreement with Seiko Epson

 Universal Display announced that it has signed an OLED evaluation agreement with Seiko Epson. Under the agreement, Universal Display will supply its proprietary phosphorescent OLED materials and technology to Epson for AR/VR microdisplay applications.

Seiko Epson is producing OLED microdisplays (branded as Si-OLED) for many years. It's latest announced display is a 0.453-inch 1920x1080 panel. The company's displays are used in its Moverio series of AR smartglasses. The company is also developing optical design engines (its 4th-Gen one is pictured above).

Samsung asks the ITC to ban the import of aftermarket AMOLED smartphone displays into the US

According to reports, Samsung Display has appealed to the US ITC asking to ban aftermarket and refurbished AMOLED displays from entering the US.

Today it is possible to repair a smartphone display and replace the screen - and there are companies (mostly independent outlets) that offer lower cost displays - which could refurbished ones, aftermarket imports - or even lower cost alternatives produced by other makers. If the ITC approves Samsung's request, these will not be available anymore, and only original Samsung AMOLED displays will be allowed.

The Korean Government to designate OLED as a national strategic technology

In April 2022, we reported that the Korean Government is considering designating OLED technology as a "national strategic technology", which means that companies will be given tax benefits, to encourage further investments and R&D in the OLED industry.

According to new reports to Korea, the government will unveil a new draft tax law tomorrow that will indeed include new benefits to OLED developers, as OLED will be regarded as a national strategic technology indeed. This will encourage companies to establish new OLED R&D activities and new production lines. The government is also also looking to add microLED and quantum dot display technologies as strategic technologies.

Cattier launches OLED-powered interactive Champagne labels

French Champagne maker Cattier launched illuminated and interactive labels, powered by OLED lighting panels produced by Inuru. The project was handled by bespoke packaging platform Packhelp. The Cattier label lights up as the champagne is being poured from the bottle into a glass, and the illumination can be also enabled on demand, by a simple touch.

Inuru says that the first batch of bottles with the new labels will ship soon on select markets. Inuru produces flexible and water-proof OLED lighting panels using a printing process.

OLEDWorks shows new flexible and rigid automotive OLED lighting solutions

Last week at CES, OLEDWorks demonstrated some of its latest automotive OLED Lighting solutions. Developed together with Corning, Valeo and STMicroelectronics, OLEDWorks’ newest demonstrator contained the highest density of individually addressable segments of any flexible OLED panel.

You can see the new flexible OLED demonstrator in the video above on the left (the device on the right uses rigid OLED panels). OLEDWorks says that individually segmented OLED lighting panels increase safety on the road by allowing for improved communication through dynamic animation sequences and symbols. Manufacturing these OLED panels on flexible glass further expands lighting design opportunities with the ability to conform with curved surfaces in the car, integrating lighting directly into the vehicle’s architecture.

eMagin reported its preliminary Q4 2022 financial results

OLED microdisplay maker eMagin reported its preliminary financial results for Q4 2022 - the company expects revenues to be in the range of $8.1-8.3 million, up from $7.2 million in Q4 2021. The company says this was a positive quarter with strong bookings. The company's open order backlog at the end of 2022 was $16.7 million.

eMagin says that this was its fifth consecutive quarter in which it achieved year-over-year growth in product revenue. The company was cashflow positive in the quarter and now has $4.2 million in cash and equivalents. eMagin expects the delivery of an advanced, production-capable, dPd organic deposition tool in the second quarter of 2023.

Samsung introduces new low-blue-light AMOLED displays

Samsung has demonstrated new AMOLED display panels that offer a lower blue-light emission compared to its current low-blue-light AMOLEDs. Samsung says that the new display reduces blue light emission by 70% compared to 'conventional' displays (which probably means LCD displays, not standard AMOLEDs).

Samsung brands these new displays as Gen-2 LBL (low-blue-light) AMOLEDs, and says that the lower blue light emission was achieved by a combination of the latest OLED emitter materials and advanced AI software. Samsung is mostly targeting laptop displays, saying that the new Gen-2 LBL displays can achieve a brightness of up to 2,000 nits. Samsung will start producing Gen-2 LBL AMOLEDs by the end of 2023.
