LG Display equips a tour bus in Korea with transparent OLEDs to create an augmented reality tour

LG Display has equipped a tour bus in Korea's Suwon town with transparent OLED displays, to enable a sort of augmented-reality tour that overlays historic images that simulate life in Suwon in 1795.


LGD says that "historical figures come to life as animated scenes match up with the fortress walls to show them in their original setting. You get to sense what this city would have looked like centuries ago, and how people in traditional dress would have lived and celebrated major events. There’s even a demonstration of old technologies during the tour, with text in Korean and English to guide you along".

You can now pre-order LG's 97" OLEDG2 TV in Korea, for $28,000

LG Electronics started accepting pre-orders of its largest OLED TV yet, the 97" OLED G2. The price of the TV, in Korea, is 40 million Won (around $28,500).

LG's G2 Gallery OLED TV series, are offered in 55-, 65-, 77-, 83- and 97-inch sizes. The TVs offer 4K 120Hz OLED evo G panels, LG's Alpha 9-5 video processor, 4 HDMI 2.1 inputs, HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision and WebOS 22.

INFICON details its Magnesium-Sensitive Crystal for OLED deposition

OLED producers have been struggling with the deposition of magnesium materials during the OLED production process. Background

Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is one of the most important INFICON products for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and optical device fabrication, as well as for many other applications. The change in the QCM's resonance frequency due to mass loading by thin films allows it to be used as a surrogate for correlating the rate of the film thickness accumulation on a substrate. The design of INFICON High Precision Sensor Crystals was based upon many OLED manufacturers™ requirement of more stable crystals that are less prone to activity dips (instability in the activity signal) in controlling the deposition of OLED materials. The field performances of INFICON High Precision Sensor Crystals have shown to improve rate stability with nearly extinguished activity dips in terms of the number of occurrences as well as the magnitude when they rarely occur.

Sewon's OLED phototherapy patch passes FDA registration

A few weeks ago Korea-based Sewon announced that it is entering the OLED-based optical patch business, based on technology developed by Kwangbio and Korea's KAIST institute. The idea is to use OLED panels for phototherapy that can be used to treat pain and encourage skin regeneration.

Sewon E&C now announced that its OLED phototherapy patch, the first such patch in the world, has completed the FDA registration. The company now aims to accelerate the commercialization, and has already secured the site for the production facility. Sewon hopes to bring the patch to the market by the end of 2022 or early in 2023.

RAPT develops unique touch solutions for OLED monitors and signage displays

The COVID-19 pandemic created an increased demand for high quality IT solutions, including monitors and collaborative tools, which prompted OLED display makers to start offering solutions for this market for applications like computer monitors, signage and more.

OLED displays that are 20-inch or more suffer from incompatibility with standard capacitive touch, because the thin OLED panel results in large parasitic capacitive coupling with the touch surface. The dynamic driving of OLEDs (where only lit pixels draw current) further reduces the capacitive touch performance by introducing unpredictable “display pattern noise”. These issues are easily mitigated in small area displays, but as OLEDs increase in size, the performance and costs of capacitive solutions suffer.

Samsung to use a single-stack structure in its first 8-Gen OLED production line

Last Month Samsung Display confirmed that Samsung is now building a 8-Gen (2200x2500 mm) OLED production line, that will begin production in 2024.

It is expected that the new line will mostly produce panels for IT devices (laptops and tablest) and also for automotive applications. Many believe that these applications will adopt tandem stack structure to increase brightness and lifetime. According to a new report, Samsung's new line will adopt a single-stack structure, and not a dual-stack one.

LG Display: OLED will be the main display technology for future AR and VR devices

Yang Joon-Young, a VP at LG Display, says that recent improvement in OLED technologies will cause an industry shift from LCoS devices to OLED microdisplays in AR systems. LCoS will find a market in low-cost AR headsets, but most AR solutions will be based on OLEDs.

Next-generation VR systems, which will require higher pixel densities, will also switch from LCD and mobile AMOLED displays to OLED microdisplays that will offer pixel densities of over 3000 PPI.

UBI: sales of medium and large OLED displays will reach 26.3 million units in 2022

UBI Research estimates that sale revenues of medium and large OLED displays (UBI defines these from 10-inch and up) rose 22.9% in Q2 2022 compared to the previous quarter and 11.2% compared to last year - to reach $1.67 billion.

In term of sales, UBI estimates that total shipments in 2022 will reach 26.3 million units. Most of the growth in 2022 will come from laptop displays - where shipments almost doubled in the second quarter to 2.18 million units.

UBI: 724.8 million small-area OLED displays will ship in 2022

UBI Research estimates that in 2022, a total of 724.8 million small-area OLED panels will ship. By 2027, the market will grow to 937.8 million units.

In Q2 2022, UBI says small-area OLED revenue were $7.87 billion, a 16% decrease from the first quarter, and a 9.7% increase compared to last year. In terms of shipments, 130 million units were shipped in Q2, down from 150 million. UBI expects that rigid OLED market revenues will continue to shrink as OLED makers in China are reducing the price of their OLED panels.
