Electron spin control enables triplet-only excition formation in OLEDs

Researchers from RIKEN, the University of California, San Diego and others have developed a new mechanism to enhance the efficiency of OLED devices. The basic idea is to manipulate the electron spin to control the OLED exciton formation - basically lowering the OLED voltage so that only triplets and formed instead of a combination of singlets and triplets.

The researchers demonstrated this principal using an organic molecule called 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA), placed on a metal-supported, ultrathin insulating film. By measuring the emission spectrum, they could monitor the exciton type - and show that at a low voltage, only triplets are formed.

LG Display to start producing 48" OLED TV panels in 2020

In March 2019 we reported that LG Display has a 48" OLED TV panel in its roadmap - but we did not have any information regarding LGD's actual production plans.

It is now reported in China that LG Display confirmed it is developing a 48" OLED TV panel and plans to start producing these in 2020 - which could mean that the TV themselves will hit the stores in 2020 - but this could also mean that they will arrive only in 2021.

Oppo and Xiaomi show smartphone prototypes with under-the-OLED cameras

In the last few years we witnessed an interesting evolution of smartphone display sizes: from bezel on the top and the bottom, to notch-type displays, to full-screen displays with pop-up selfie cameras and also displays with round laser-cut holes.

OLED makers have successfully integrated fingerprint sensors behind the OLED panels, but integrating a camera completely behind a transparent part of the OLED display is more difficult. Earlier this year Samsung Display estimated that it will take at least 3 years for this technology to reach the market - but yesterday both Xiaomi and Oppo unveiled smartphone prototypes with selfie cameras under the OLED display.

It turns out that Asus has another OLED laptop in the works - the ZenBook Pro Duo which actually features two screens - an SDC 15.6" 4K AMOLED main display and another, smaller 14" LCD that is placed above the keyboard. This is just a prototype, but according to reports this seems like a finished product, and it could reach the markets soon.

LG Display halts flexible OLED production at its E6 line due to encapsulation equipment glitches

According to a report from Korea, LG Display has halted production at one of its production lines at its E6 production fab, LG's 6-Gen flexible OLED line that commenced production at the end of 2018.

According to the report, the problem lies with LGD's thin film encapsulation equipment - specifically the equipment that deposited the organic particles - which apparently suffers from sub par performance, not good enough for commercial production. LG is using equipment made by its subsidiary LG PRI in the E6-1 line, which is now halted.

Planar launches its 2nd-Gen 55" transparent OLED signage displays likely based on LGD panels

In November 2015 Planar launched its LookThru displays, based on 55" FHD transparent OLED panels made by Samsung Display. SDC stopped producing these OLEDs shortly after, though, and Planar had to halt its sales.

In February 2019 LG Display launched its own 55" FHD transparent OLED production, and now Planar announced its 2nd-Gen LookThru (LO552) displays - which are likely based on LGD's panels this time.
