Reports say SDC decided to convert its L7 LCD fab to flexible OLED production in a $2.5 billion investment

According to Business Korea, Samsung Display's new chief has quickly started to change the direction of the company, to focus on flexible OLEDs and dispose of some of the loss-making LCD business.

The post says that Samsung decided to sell at least some of its L7 LCD lines at the Tangjeong plant in Asan, and convert these lines to flexible OLED lines. Samsung will invest $2.56 billion by the end of 2017 on the new flexible OLED lines.

The US DoE invests in four OLED research projects

The US Department of Energy (US DoE) announced funding for several new efficient-lighting R&D projects. The DoE will invest more than $10.5 million and will make a cost-share contribution for a total public-private investment of over $13.5 million in 9 different projects.

Our of these projects, four are for OLED lighting.

Sony demonstrates a large Crystal-LED based outdoor display

In 2012, Sony demonstrated a new micro-LED based display technology called Crystal-LED. These displays use ultra-fine RGB LEDs to create a self-emitting display. Sony actually demonstrated a prototype 55" Full-HD Crystal-LED TV.

Sony never mentioned this technology again, but last week during the InfoComm trade show, Sony unveiled a large tiled outdoor 9.75 x 2.74 meter 8Kx2K display based on Crystal LED technology (Sony calls this display Canvas Display, or CLEDIS).

LG starts shipping the 77" Signature G6 OLED TV for $24,500

Last week Amazon listed LG's 77" Signature OLED G6 TV, for $27,223 - and today LG started shipping its flagship 2016 TV. The good news is that the price was reduced to "only" $24,500.

LG's Signature OLED G6 is LG's top-end TV model for 2016. The G6 feature an ultra-slim on-glass design, a high-end pivoting Harman Kardon soundbar, LG's webOS 3.0, Color Prime PRO technology and HDR. The G6 models are available in 65 and 77 inches, and the 65" G6 OLED TV is now shipping for $7,999. I have seen the 77" OLED TV at SID 2016, and it is truly stunning!

SDC demonstrates OLED displays for laptops at SID 2016

Samsung demonstrated two OLED displays for laptops at SID 2016. First up was a 13.3" 2560x1440 (221 PPI) panel. This display offers a brightness of 300 nits and is 1.01 mm thick and weighs 120 grams.

The second display is a bit larger at 14", but otherwise pretty much the same (2560x1440, 210 PPI) and it weighs 130 grams.

LG's 77" Signature OLED G6 to cost $27,000 in the US

LG Electronics is getting ready to release the 77" Signature OLEDG6 TV in the US. Amazon.com already lists the TV, for $27,223 - but Amazon does not say the release date yet.

LG's Dual-View Flat OLED commercial displays to ship next month

In September 2015 LG Display presented new double-sided OLED display prototypes, in both curved and flat formats, and in March 2016 LG officially launched those products under their new commercial OLED unit.

Now LG Electronics announced that the Dual-View Flat OLEDs will begin shipping in the US in July 2016. LG says that these displays will enable businesses to "create a completely immersive and more engaging environment for their customers".
