IHS estimates that the flexible display market will grow very fast, with a CAGR of 44% from 2014 onwards - to reach a market of $23 billion in 2024 (as flexible displays, mostly OLEDs, will grab 15% of the total flat panel display market).

Today IHS says that they see foldable display (in tablets and smartphones) appearing as early as next year. IHS sees 180 million foldable displays sold in 2020, which means foldable displays will take up 51% of the total flexible display market.

Back in march 2015, we reported that LG Display is in talks with companies in China, Japan and the US with an aim to establish an OLED TV alliance. Digitimes today reports that LGD is progressing with its alliance, and the company expects to start signing agreement later this month.

Digitimes says that the alliance will include China's based Skyworth, Konka, Changhong, TCL and Hisense. LGD is already supplying OLED TV panels to China's Skyworth, Changhong, Haier, Konka and KTC.

German TV brand Metz is demonstrating 4K OLED TVs at the IFA 2015 trade show. The Metz brand is now owned by China-based Skyworth, and it will be great to see Skyworth launch their OLED TVs in the Europe.

Skyworth is using LG Display's OLED panels. The company launched its first OLED TV in China back in March 2014, and will soon launch its first 4K OLED TVs.

The Korea Times posted an interesting interview with Brian Daniels, senior VP from Merck's performance materials-advanced technologies division. Brian says that Samsung is committed to OLED panels - and will return to the OLED TV market by 2017.

Merck says that improvement in OLED materials will enable cost reductions which will enable OLED TVs to reach large production volumes in three years.

In June 2015 Samsung Display unveiled large-size (55") mirror and transparent OLED display panels. According to reports, Samsung plans to mass produce these by the end of 2015 at Samsung's existing A2 Gen-5.5 AMOLED fab.

Now at the IFA 2015 trade show, Samsung is exhibiting those two displays, which they say are the first transparent display panels for commercial use on the market - which may mean that Samsung is indeed ready to ship those soon.

LG Display has been very bullish on OLED TVs for several years now, and recently the company announced a major shift in focus towards OLED technologies, with a planned investment of $8.5 billion in the next 3 years. The company's CEO, Dr. Sang Beom Han, gave the IFA 2015 keynote speech, and he was very enthusiastic on OLEDs.

During his speech, Dr. Han said that "OLED will bring revolution to people’s lives" - as it's the only technology that offers enhanced images combined with dynamic form - mainly transparency and flexibility.

A few days ago Panasonic announced the company's first OLED TV, the TX-65CZ950 - a curved 65" 4K OLED panel that features Panasonic's 4K Pro tech which includes advanced gradation controls and 3D color look tables. The TV supports HDR and is THX certified - and is based on WRGB (WOLED) panels produced by LG Display.

The director of Panasonic's TV business, told CNET that the company expects OLED panel prices to drop, to the point where they are within reach of average consumers in two or three years. He also says that the benefit of the curved shape is "not so big", and consumers prefer flat TVs. In fact he says that Panasonic's next flagship TV will "probably" be flat.

eMagin, the OLED microdisplay maker, has entered into an agreement with Craig-Hallum Capital Group that will allow them to raise up to $4.5 million. The proceeds from the sale of shares will be used for "general corporate purposes, including R&D, sales and marketing, and working capital".

It's been years since eMagin raised new funds as the company has been generating cash for most of the time. The company says they are making good progress on direct-patterned OLEDs and their new microdisplay-based HMD prototype. It's likely that these projects require more cash then the company currently has. As of the end of Q2 2015, eMagin had 5.4 million in cash and equivalents.

In September 2014 OTI Lumionics unveiled their first product, the Aerelight OLED desk lamp - which is finally shipping for $299. The lamp is a high-end luminaire that uses a single OLED panel to provide 1,000 lux. It is made from an anodized aluminum frame that responds to touch, for intuitive power and dimming control. It also features a built-in wireless charging pad to charge all of your Qi compatible mobile devices.

In February 2015 OTI received a $4.55 million USD grant from the Canadian government to build an OLED lighting pilot production line in Canada. The company says that the new line will enable them to produce large flexible OLED lighting panels.
