Universal Display report several OLED technology advances at DisplayWeek 2014

Universal Display report several OLED technology advances at DisplayWeek. First up, the company is showing several advances in OLED lighting. UDC is presenting a new approach to make white OLEDs. The panels are based on RGB stripes, each controlled with a separate current driver. UDC says that this approach potentially improves the OLED panel performance, manufacturing yield, brightness uniformity and color-tunability.

UDC calls this new architecture "RGB monochrome striped", and they demonstrate a 15x15 cm color-tunable white OLED that features an effifacy of 63 lm/W and a color temperature of 3000K. UDC is also showing a 100 lm/W all-phosphorescent warm white OLED with a lifetime (LT70) of 60,000 hours at 1,000 cd/m2. Finally, UDC is also showing a remarkable high R9 warm white WOLED with CRI of 96.

SEL and Nokia developed foldable OLED prototypes

Semiconductor Energy Laboratory, in collaboration with Nokia developed a new foldable OLED display. The companies are demonstrating two display prototypes. Both displays are 5.9" in size with a 1280x720 (249 PPI) resolution. One of them can be folded in two (like a book) and the other can be folded in three (seen in the video below).

Those flexible OLED displays use a white OLEDs with color filters (WOLED-CF) design. To produce the display, SEL deposited the organic and color filters layers on a glass substrate, which is later peeled off and replaced with a flexible substrate. The displays can be bent up up to a curvature of 2 mm (two-folds) or 4 mm (three folds). SEL says that these displays can be bent more than 100,000 times.

Sony's SID keynote speech highlights the company's OLED TV efforts

Last month it was reported that Sony decided to pull out of the consumer OLED TV market, to focus on UHD LCDs. Later on Sony denied that report, and a different report suggested that Sony, Panasonic and JDI are looking to consolidate their OLED businesses. We're still not sure what's up with Sony's OLED program, but the following bit of news gives some room for optimism.

Sony's Dr. Kazumasa Nomoto presented an opening keynote speech at the SID DisplayWeek conference. This speech was all about Sony's efforts to create a truly immersive TV experience. In his speech, Dr. Nomoto says that OLED display show promise of achieving high dynamic range because of their near perfect black levels - something that cannot be achieved even with local dimming LCDs.

Alkilu now accepts pre-orders for low-cost OLED lamps, lists LG Chem as partner

Alkilu was established in 2013 with an aim to develop innovative consumer OLED lighting products, and the company unveiled their low cost OLED products at CES 2014, promising to release the first panels in April or May 2014. Those OLEDs aren't shipping yet, the company announced that they now accept pre-orders for some of the devices.

Alkilu also announced several new products, including the Trio OLED Light, shown above. This $59.95 lamp use a single 4x4 inch OLED panel made by LG Chem that features a color temperature of 3000K and a lifetime (LT70) of 20,000 hours. The company stated before that they are in talks with several OLED producers, and now we know that LG Chem is one of them. LG will co-market the Trio OLED Light with Alkilu.

Plastic Logic's 4" monochrome flexible AMOLED video

A couple of months ago, Plastic Logic showed a monochrome (256 gray levels) 4" 360x128 (95 PPI) flexible AMOLED prototype. This is a fully-organic AMOLED panel that uses Plastic Logic's flexible OTFT backplane.

Now the company published the somewhat annoying video you see above that details the company's OLED efforts and business development goals. During the video they also show the flexible AMOLED in action.

Samsung and LG at SID: no new OLEDs, but prestigious awards

LG Display and Samsung are showing several OLED panels at SID - but unfortunately no new panels or developments. LGD is showing both its OLED TVs and its flexible OLEDs, and they received the Gold Award for Display Application of the Year for its flexible plastic OLED panel (used in the LG G Flex) and the Silver Award for Display of the Year for the world’s first curved OLED TV panel. LG's 77" UHD Curved OLED TV won the best-in-show award.

Samsung is also showing OLED displays - but no OLED TV panels. Only small (up to 5.7") display. I actually expected SDC to show their upcoming 8.4" and 10.5" AMOLED panels (that are reportedly adopted in Samsung's upcoming tablets). Maybe the company doesn't want to unveil these yet. SDC does show their two flexible AMOLEDs, the 5.7" (as used in the Galaxy Round) and the 1.84" one (as used in the Gear Fit). The 5.7" display won the Gold Award for Display of The year.

AUO shows several OLED panels at SID 2014

Two months ago AUO announced a 1.6" AMOLED for wearable applications. Now at SID Display Week 2014, AUO is showing this new display. The company says that this is the world's first 1.6" in-cell touch AMOLED. The panel is only 0.5 mm thick and is very power efficient.

AUO is also showing a 0.2 mm thick 5" flexible OLED prototype. This panel is made on a plastic substrate and it adopts thin film encapsulation technology - which enable it to reach a minimum bending radius of less than 1 cm.

Acuity Brands adopts OLEDWorks Amber OLED panels for healthcare oriented lighting concepts

Acuity Brands shows new use cases for its Marker OLED luminaire, which uses Amber OLED panels made by OLEDWorks. The Marker has been introduced in 2013, but now Acuity reveals more details (such as the OLED supplier) and new applications.

Acuity Brands says that the OLED markers can be used for decorative, orientation and low-level illumination. This we've known before - but now Acuity also tells us that this concept also has specific applications for healthcare facilities - as directional beacons in high-traffic areas and low-level illumination in critical care areas.
