Updated: it turns out that the 85" bendable TV prototype is an LCD, but Samsung indeed also shows smaller (55") bendable OLEDs.

Yesterday we reported that Samsung unveiled a 85" bendable TV prototype at CES, and at that post I assumed that this was an LCD panel. But I'm happy to be mistaken - it's actually an OLED, as you can see from Samsung's booth photo clearly saying this is a bendable OLED TV:

It actually seems to me that those OLED TVs in the photo above aren't so big - it seems to be around 55" in size and not 85". So perhaps these are different prototype, I'm not sure, but now it seems likely that the 85" prototype bendable TV is also an OLED.

We already knew that LG aims to bring the G Flex smartphone to the US, but now AT&T officially announced it plans to offer the flexible OLED phone. In addition, LG revealed that Sprint and T-Mobile will also offer the phone soon.

LG says we should expect the phone in the US within a month or two (in Q1 2014), but they wouldn't reveal the price (but you can be sure this is going to be very expensive).

We heard several reports from Korea that Samsung is set to unveil AMOLED tablets at CES. Samsung indeed release several new tablets at CES, but all of them use LCD displays. The main new family of tablets is the Galaxy Tab Pro, which comes in 12.2", 10.1" and 8.4" sizes - and all use 2560x1600 LCDs.

So far Samsung is disappointing us at CES - there's no new OLED products on display. Hopefully previous reports that the company is shifting its focus back to LCD to lower costs aren't true. We still know that SDC regards OLEDs as the future display for premium devices. Perhaps they are indeed shifting their OLED focus to flexible displays.

LG Display's CEO, Han Sang-Beom, said yesterday that the company aims to lead the wearable device display market with its flexible plastic-based OLEDs. The company is already in talks with its major clients ("top-tier makers") to supply flexible displays for bendable devices.

Han says that the company is ready to supply "many clients" with flexible OLEDs. The company already has internal shipment targets, but he wouldn't reveal those targets and any of the potential clients. Han did mention both Sony and Google as companies "interested in wearable devices" but he didn't go as far as saying they are interested in LGD's OLEDs.

A few months ago we reported that Oculus VR's CEO hinted that the company aims to adopt an OLED display (instead of the current 7" LCD) in their upcoming head mounted display (HMD), the Oculus Rift. Yesterday at CES the company unveiled their latest prototype (called Crystal Cove), and indeed it uses an OLED.

Oculus chose an OLED because they really want a low persistence display. They say that "it’s incredible the difference low persistence makes... It’s mind-blowing.". The OLED display runs at a high refresh rate - it switches in well under a millisecond - faster than any LCD monitor on the market. In fact, the company says that this is also much faster than any other OLED panel on the market.

LG announced that it plans to launch their 77" curved UHD OLED TV, the 77EC9800, in Q2 2014. The price will be $29,999. That's a very steep price of course, but this will be probably the best display you could buy in 2014 (unless you want an even larger panel, of course).

The 77EC9800 features LG's Color Refiner that results in superior color consistency and balance, High Dynamic Range (HDR), passive 3D FPR, LG's Tru-ULTRA HD Engine Pro that can upscale resolutions from SD to 4K and Motion Estimation Motion Compensation (MEMC). The TV also includes LG's newest Smart-TV platform.

LG already announced it will be showing several new OLED TV models at CES (including new 55", 65" and 77" models), but today at CES the company unveiled a bendable 77" 4K OLED. As was speculated last month, this panel can change from flat to curved using a "combination of water and motors" (whatever that means).

Engadget says the new TV is gorgeous. They were told by LG that they actually plan to ship this TV to the US soon - at H2 2014 or maybe at the beginning of 2015. It'll be interesting to see how all this bending effects the OLED structure. The TV anyway moves 7.5 cm to bend (it's eight centimeters narrower in total at full curve).

Haier announced that they will show curved OLED TVs at the CES 2014 event. The Chinese company will show two models, 55" and 65" in size. Both OLEDs will have a Full-HD resolution and not 4K.

I do not know who provides the panels for Haier, but it's highly likely that these are LGD WRGB panels. LGD is the only company that makes 65" OLEDs (unless Samsung will also reveal such OLEDs at CES, of course). LG Display is also providing OLED panels for China's Skyworth.

A new week is starting, and the rumor mill regarding Samsung's upcoming GS5 flagship smartphone's display is not stopping. The latest reports from China suggest that Samsung Display is experiencing difficulties in producing those 5.25" WQHD (560 PPI) AMOLED panels required for the GS5. Samsung may choose to adopt Sharp's 5.25" 2K Ultra HD 560 ppi LTPS LCDs.

While Samsung holds a 3% stake in Sharp, it seems highly unlikely for the company to buy displays from Sharp and not from its own display maker. We heard that SDC already started producing those 5.25" AMOLEDs, and there are also reports that the company is increasing OLED production capacity to meet demand in 2014 (from both phones and tablets).

Taiwan's Digitimes reports that local equipment suppliers are seeing increased orders from Samsung and LG for components used in smartphones with flexible displays. These orders are "mostly" for Samsung's Galaxy Round and LG's G Flex (which hints that perhaps there are new phones with flexible displays on the way).

The Taiwanese suppliers say that most phone vendors are focusing on low-priced units, but Samsung is actually looking to further its presence in the high-end market. This contrasts with a previous report from Korea that claims that Samsung is focusing on lower-end mobile phones that use LCD displays.
