RED announces a new OLED EVF

Camera maker RED announced their next generation EVF - the Bomb OLED EVF. We do not have a lot of technical information, but RED says that the OLED microdisplay (maker unknown) improves the contrast ratio "dramatically", and reduces the power consumption by almost 75% (compared to the older LCoS EVF). The temperature operating range improved to -46C/70C (from -10C/50C) and the Black uniformity and White uniformity is now near 100%. The resolution is 1,280x848.

The OLED Bomb EVF costs $3900 and is now in stock. LCoS EVF owners can upgrade for $1,200. Here's a nice video from Engadget showing RED's new accessory line, including the EVF:

LGD: our IPS-LCD offers better power consumption and color accuracy than OLEDs

LG Display is touting their 4.5" True HD IPS-LCD display (which does not support Full-HD, mind you, the resolution is 1,280x720). The company posted some slides comparing the HD IPS-LCD display to Samsung's Super AMOLED HD (as used in the Galaxy Nexus and other devices). LG Display says that the LCD is more sharp and clear (due to the Real Stripe matrix vs the Pentile one used in Samsung's AMOLED):

An interview with Merck's OLED unit VP, Dr. Udo Heider

Q: Dr. Heider, thanks for taking the time to do yet another interview with us.

Thanks Ron. I do appreciate this opportunity to communicate about our recent Merck OLED activities.

I'm assuming that Merck is still focused on Solution Processable materials. Can you give us a short update on the current status of your materials?

Yes, of course, we are very diligently focused on solution processable materials development based on our customers requests. As communicated in the past, Merck is working on solution processable small molecule materials. Our chemists have devised ways to redesign an evaporable small molecule and optimize its performance within a soluble device stack, applicable to the various soluble "printing" process windows.

Philips unveils new functional OLED panel (115 lumens), lighting installations

Philips has some interesting news for us today at the opening of the L+B 2012 exhibition: a new OLED panel that is suitable for functional lighting, a couple of new OLED installations and a nice new chanelier.



First up is a new OLED panel called the GL350 (GL stands for General Lighting). This is the first OLED to hit the "functional lighting" barrier as Philips calls it with its high brightness - 115 lm. It's 12.4x12.4 cm in size (155 cm2) and very homogeneous according to Philips.

Sharp begins to produce Oxide TFT (IGZO) based LCDs

Sharp announced that they have begun to produce Oxide-TFT (IGZO) based LCDs at their Kameyama Plant #2. Sharp says that these displays will have smaller TFTs and thus increased pixel transparency - which leads to lower power consumption. Sharp's proprietary UV2A*3 photo-alignment technology employed in Sharp's AQUOS LCD TVs enables these displays to achieve high image quality.

Sharp also revealed some sample panel specification: 32" 3,840x2,160 (140 ppi), 10" 2,560x1,600 (300 ppi), 7" 800x1,280 (217 ppi). Sharp is expanding production scale through April "to meet market demand".

Ducati's new superbike has an OLED dash

Ducati announced a new superbike, the Ducati 1199 Panigale. It's the lightest production superbike (361 lbs dry weight) and one of the most powerful (195 hp peak power). It's got a full-LED headlight and an OLED dash:

The 1199 Panigale is now available. The base model costs $17,995, the "S" model costs $22,995 and the "S" Tricolore costs $27,995.

AUO's Lextar to release OLED lighting modules

AUO's LED maker subsidiary Lextar announced it will show new portable OLED lighting panels. The panels will be powered from built-in Lithium-ion batteries and has a magnet on the pack so it can attach to metallic objects. The panels are 3.7 mm thick and include a 3-section dimmer.

Lextar will also show a concept "OLED Wall Brick" built from red, blue and yellow OLED modules that can change color depending on one’s mood and location.
