Panasonic's president Fumio Ohtsubo says that Panasonic is indeed developing an OLED TV, and hopes to release it in 2012. In fact Panasonic hopes they won't be "too late" in this market. Last month it was reported that Panasonic is working on an 8.5-Gen Pilot R&D line.

Back in 2009, Panasonic teamed up with Sumitomo to jointly-develop OLED TVs, based on Sumitomo's PLED materials and technology. We haven't heard anything about this collaboration since, so we do not know whether Panasonic will attempt to produce SM-OLED or P-OLED based TVs.

Lumiotec signed a new OLED technology license agreement with Universal Display - and will integrate UDC's technology and materials into their OLED lighting products. Lumiotec will pay license fees and running royalties to UDC, and the term of the agreement runs through December 31, 2015.

Lumiotec says that they will start delivering sample panels next month (February 2012) - mainly 145x145 mm square panels - with warm white color and 40 lm/W efficiency. The company will start mass production these panels by April. Lumiotec also says that they are developing high-efficient natural white panels - and these will be released sometime during 2012.

DisplaySearch says that OLED displays are estimated to take around 4% of the total flat panel display (FPD) industry in 2011, and this will grow to around 16% in 2018. Revenue wise, OLEDs will grow from over $4 billion in 2011 to over $20 billion in 2018. A few weeks ago DisplaySearch said that AMOLED display revenue will reach $3.36 billion in 2011 - which means that they forecast around $700 million in PMOLED revenue.

The company also says that OLED lighting is gaining momentum, and will reach $6 billion in revenue by 2018.

Sony announced that they are developing a new display technology called Crystal-LED. Crystal-LED uses ultra-fine RGB LEDs to create a self-emitting display - basically this is similar to OLEDs, but with in-organic LEDs. Sony actually unveiled a prototype 55" Full-HD TV panel at CES 2012:

The TV uses over six-million LEDs and, compared to existing Sony LCD and Plasma displays features a higher contrast ratio (about 3.5 times higher), wider color gamut (about 1.4 times) and faster response time (10 times faster). It should also be more efficient, but this will depend on the image shown (just like in OLEDs).

As promised, LG unveiled the 55EM9600 55" OLED TV at CES 2012. We got some nice photos and a video to show, but sadly LG didn't unveil any new technical details, pricing information or release date. We do know that the TV will be called EM960V in the UK when it launches there.

This wasn't a big surprise, but Samsung officially announced their 55" Super-OLED TV. Samsung explains that the 'Super OLED' technology is what we call 'True-OLED' - or RGB OLED subpixels as opposed to LG's white OLED with color-filters design (WOLED-CF), and LED TVs. The TV also supports active-shutter 3D and Samsung's Smart TV and Smart-Interaction technologies. It includes a camera can can be controlled via a remote control, voice control, motion control and face recognition.

While Samsung promises that the Super-OLED TV will be available by Q2 or Q3 2012, they didn't release any pricing information or even a product model. We'll have to wait for these... Here's a video from Samsung's press conference when they announced this cool TV:

OSRAM's Lab.Me laboratory is showing a new nice concept OLED lamp called the A4. The idea is that this lamp can be folded to fit inside an A4 envelope:

Toshiba held a press conference, one day before CES 2012 opens, and they unveiled the OLED tablet they already said they'll show. It seems that the tablet is a "reference design" - so it's not a finished product yet. And the OLED panel is 7.7".

According to the report, the OLED does not use PenTile. It's probably the same Super AMOLED Plus panel that Samsung uses in their own Galaxy 7.7 Tab. Hopefully we'll hear more from Toshiba soon - including when and where they plan to release this tablet.

A: The outstanding feature of the flexible OLED shown is that the production is based on well-tried OSRAM OLED processes. The production line is located in Regensburg (Bavaria), so we can benefit from our local expertise.
