Efficient and cheap TMOS (MEMS Film) displays to be available next year

Uni-Pixel are working on MEMS films, to be used in time-multiplexed optical shutter (TMOS) displays, which should be available next year. These displays are 10-times brighter than LCDs, and are also cheaper to make (60% according to Uni-Pixel). They can be fabricated on the same manufacturing lies as LCDs. They use a single-layer of MEMS film, between the top and bottom glass sheets, in the same structure as LCDs (that use 5 layers between the glasses). The films are made using roll-to-roll manufacturing lines, and can be made transparent.

Samsung Electronics is working with Uni-Pixel on the display tech to make 4" TMOS displays. In the future, TMOS can be used to make larger displays. These will feature a faster refresh rate than LCDs.

The world's first OLED Lighting design conference

The OLED-Lighting design conference is the world's first (and only) OLED lighting design conference. It will take place in December 2nd in Boston. The event organize, OLED Insider say they gained backing from the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), The Professional Lighting Designers' Association and The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES) for the two-day conference.

Highlights of the event include discussion about design capabilities and new challenges that OLED lighting presents, how can one use OLEDs capabilities and attractive price point to win over new customers and tap into new markets for lighting design, and the efficacy of OLEDs. The Summit will also provide an exclusive insight into how OLED technology will add value to many types of light installations and broaden design capabilities through improved colour range, viewing angles etc.

Zumtobel and Fraunhofer create a joint venture for OLED lighting

Zumbotel Group from Austria and the Fraunhofer IPMS institute has agreed to create a new joint-venture for the development and production of OLED lighting modules. The new company will be called Ledon OLED Lighting. It will be based in Dresden, and will have 10-15 employees in the first year.

Ledon will not only produce OLED panels, but will also develop and manufacture complete OLED lighting solutions and concepts for large-scale OLED systems. Ledon will use the Fraunhofer's pilot line, to make OLED panels on 370x470 mm2 substrates with a cycle time of just three minutes.

Back in January 2009 we have interviewed Prof. karl Leo from the Fruanhofer IPMS, and he explains their technology and aims.
