TPO facing technical issues, delays AMOLED panel launch

A few weeks ago it was reported that Nokia are using two OLED panel suppliers - Samsung and TPO. Now we hear that TPO has some technical issues, and are not yet supplying panels to Nokia.

TPO plans to launch their first product later this year - a 3" (or a bit larger) WVGA panel for mobile phones. This panel is already in development. In 1H 2010 TPO will release a 3" VGA panel aimed for digital cameras, and in 2H 2010 a 4" WVGA panel for mobile phones.

Project TOPLESS presents OLED desk lamp video

Project TOPLESS is working towards OLED lighting, and have recently made a few Polymer-OLED desk lamp prototypes. The OLED lamps have five 2" PLED panels, each requiring 0.7W (the total power input is 3.5Watts - 5V dc @ 0.7amps).

You can see in the video that the power switch is located in the lower left hand corner of the Z-arm, and it is activated when moving from the horizontal position. Towards the end of the video you can see a comparison of color rendering under fluorescent and OLED lighting conditions.

TOPLESS (Thin Organic Polymeric Light Emitting Semi-conductor Surfaces) objectives include an efficacy of 20Lm/w, color temperature suitable for general white light applications and large single-pixel devices. TOPLESS will run till February 2010. They are working currently on improving the lamp's quality. If all goes well, the project hopes to start a pre-production OLED lighting line in the UK, making several thousands panels by the end of 2011.

New cavity design boosts OLED light efficiency

Scientists from the independent Stanford Research Institute (SRI) have design a new efficient OLEDs using cavities - in fact the new OLEDs are five times as efficient as standard OLED (i.e. five times as much light per watt consumed). The green COLEDs (Cavity-OLEDs) achieved 80 lumens per watt, and the blue ones 30lumens per watt.

They used Polymer-OLEDs provided by SDK, and the team says that they are ready to make white light (by mixing red, green and blue OLEDs), and estimate that products based on this new tech could arrive as soon as next year.
