CMEL recently was reported to have landed orders for 7.6-inch OLED panels from Kodak with shipments to kick off in the middle of this year, according to today's Chinese-language Commercial Times.
CMEL broke a record by delivering over 60,000 units of 2.4- and 2.8-inch AM OLED panels used in handsets in December, added the paper.
Sony has unveiled a new 27" OLED TV prototype at CES 2008. The resolution is 1920x1080 (Full-HD), the contrast is over 1,000,000:1, the brightness is 200 cd/m2 (all white) and the peak brightness is over 600 cd/m2. Here's a nice video showing Sony's TV prototype:
Sony is "encouraged" by the sales of their XEL-1 OLED TV (11") in Japan, and will start to sell those in the US too.
The price is set for 2,500$.
LG.Philips LCD has announced that it will debut what it claims is the world's highest resolution 14.3-inch flexible color E-paper display at CES 2008.
The 14.3-inch E-paper display, which is equivalent in size to an A4 sheet of paper, represents a significant improvement over its predecessors with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, and the ability to display 16.7 million colors, making it suitable for use in high-end multimedia applications. These displays are extremely energy efficient, only using power when the image changes. Additionally, the displays are extremely thin, at less than 300 micrometers.
Apple has filed a patent for a dynamic-keyboard - where each key is lighted up by a LED. It's an interesting development considering Art.Lebedev is working on such a keyboard for a long time (the Optimus Keyboard).
There are reports that only one day after they introduced the XEL-1, Sony sold all 1,300 units in Japan.
The next batch will only be ready towards the end of January.
Art.Lebedev (makers of the OLED optimus keyboard) has a new prototype called Optimus Tactus. The idea is to have one large OLED display, which is touch sensitive.
This way you can change not only individual keys, but to completely change the keyboard's layout.
Canon Inc. plans to develop surface-conduction electron-emitter display, or SED, televisions using its own technology, the Asahi newspaper reported, without saying where it obtained the information. Canon has been involved in a patent dispute with U.S.- based Nano-Proprietary Inc., which prevented the Japanese company from putting SED flat-panel televisions on the market in 2007 as originally planned, the newspaper said today.
The company has started the development of a new electron- emitting technology that should be more stable than Nano- Proprietary's, the Asahi said. Canon now aims to mass produce the televisions, according to the report.
Shipments of OLED TVs will rocket from 2,000 units in 2007 to 18,000 units in 2008, while further shooting up to 50,000 units in 2009 and 120,000 units in 2010, according to Digitimes Research.
