Simrad Optronics Chooses eMagin Microdisplay for Targeting System

eMagin Corporation is providing its microdisplays for Simrad Optronics' LP10TL Target Locator. The LP10TL is a fully integrated fire control solution.
The LP10TL provides instant target coordinates and fall-of-shot correction. The device is menu-driven and works well with field measurement devices, thermal cameras, terminals, gyros, and similar equipment. Providing dual 7x or 12x magnification and operating effectively from temperatures as low as -30 degrees C, the target locator system also incorporates GPS, digital magnetic compass, and a high-resolution OLED display. Its modular design offers a large number of possible configurations to meet each customer's specific requirements.

UDC Awarded DOE SBIR Phase II Contract for Solid-State White Lighting

UDC announced today that it has been awarded a two-year, $750,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contract by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to develop a novel white OLED light source featuring the Company’s proprietary TOLED® transparent OLED technology.

In this program entitled, High Efficiency White TOLED Devices for Lighting Applications, the Company is employing its proprietary TOLED technology to demonstrate a novel lighting concept with improved light extraction. In a conventional OLED, only approximately 25 30% of the light generated in the device is emitted to the viewer. Technologies to extract more of the light generated as useable light emission are important for achieving the performance required for OLEDs in lighting applications. During the Phase I program, Universal Display demonstrated a 20% enhancement in the amount of light extracted from an OLED by using the Company’s TOLED structure integrated with an external reflector. During this follow-on Phase II, the Company intends to optimize the performance of this novel design for white lighting applications.

DisplaySearch Announces Q2'05 OLED Y/Y Growth: Shipments Up 82%, Revenues Up 18%

DisplaySearch indicated in its latest Quarterly OLED Shipment and Forecast Report that OLED shipments grew to 14.2M and revenues hit $124.8M in Q2'05. OLED displays compete with LCDs in small/medium applications such as mobile phone main displays and subdisplays, MP3s and automotive consoles. OLED shipments increased 82% Y/Y due to 95% growth in main display sales, and 1,300% growth in MP3 player displays. All of the growth is in PMOLEDs using small molecule material; AMOLED producers--Sanyo Kodak, AUO and Sony--shipped less than 50K displays in Q2'05. PLED material panel producers dropped to two suppliers as Philips sold their facility to OTB and now represent less than 3% of the total shipments.

Samsung SDI led in units and revenue in Q2'05 with slightly over 3.8M displays shipped and $37.2M in revenue. RiTdisplay was #2 in both shipments and revenue. LGE experienced the strongest growth of the top five, with shipments up 111% Q/Q to 740K and revenue growing 92% Q/Q to $6.5M.

The Top five applications are Subdisplays, MP3, Car Audio, Main Displays and Auto Consoles.

Highest performance test equipment now available for emissive display devices

Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) has announced an upgrade to the specification of its Eclipse range of digital test equipment for use in the characterisation of emissive display devices including polymer light emitting diodes (P-OLEDs).

The new specification includes remote calibration which allows the systems to be re-calibrated in situ, and pulsed IVL testing, which combines the ability to test device lifetime and opto-electrical response in one system. CDT has also announced a new 'entry level' Eclipse system with only eight channels, and this is expected to appeal to smaller companies and academic institutions.

Toshiba’s concept OLED media viewer

The concept multimedia viewer Toshiba’s showing off at IFA is nice and all with that 1.8-inch drive and WiFi, Bluetooth, and SD, don’t get us wrong. But what we’re really feeling is that someone’s finally really starting to get some proper OLED displays out there. The Toshiba’s got a 3.5-inch 320 x 240 screen, which can apparently be tilted from the base.

Not too shabby at all, but we’re not sure how much longer we can patiently wait for these low-power vibrant-color displays to hit the streets in force.
