A Q&A with Dr. York Tsai, Wisechip's Vice President of R&D

WiseChip Semiconductor, based in Taiwan, is one of the world's leading PMOLED maker (in fact in 2015 Wisechip said it's the world's second largest). Wisechip is developing next-generation PMOLED displays, including flexible panels, transparent panels and Hyperfluorescence/TADF PMOLEDs.

WiseChip recently announced its first, and the world’s first, Hyperfluorescence display, using TADF materials provided by Kyulux. Can you tell some more about this display and its properties?

This 2.70 128x64 product is adopted mostly in industrial products. The size matters in such market but the main problem was to increase the brightness due to the limited efficiency of the fluorescence emitters. The Hyperfluorescence technology helps to settle the problem and can reach up 2.5 times brighter. It performs much better readability so users do not have to stand right in front of the device. This feature adds to the value of the end product.

The OLED TV market - quick market snapshot

This article is an extract from The OLED Handbook, 2020 edition, and gives a short introduction to the current OLED TV market status. The latest edition of the OLED handbook was published in March 2020.

LG Display

The OLED TV market is completely dominated today by LG Display, the only company that produces OLED TVs commercially. In 2013 both Samsung and LGD commenced production of OLED TVs, but Samsung quickly halted its OLED TV program to focus on Quantum-Dots enhanced TVs. In 2019 Samsung announced it is re-entering the OLED TV market and is set to build a QD-OLED production fab (more on this below).

LG Display adopted Kodak’s WRGB OLED technology (now owned by LG’s own GOT) and this technology, combined with oxide-TFT (IGZO) backplanes, enabled the company to economically scale up its large-area panel production. LG Display is producing 48 to 88 OLED TV panels, and is supplying its panels to several TV makers, including LGE, Sony, Panasonic, Philips and more.

The Coronavirus and OLED industry marketing

The Coronavirus pandemic has brought many restrictions and changes to the world. Governments are doing their best to enforce social distancing and quarantine regulations in order to contain the virus outbreak, but this fight inevitably brings with it negative impacts on various markets, especially consumer goods. On the OLED front, it is evident that demands for consumer devices is dropping. Hopefully, this will not be the situation forever and when the lock-down experienced in so many countries can be safely lifted, people will return to work, demand will rise and things will return to normal.

In the meantime, the display industry (OLED industry included) is not standing still - companies are continuing to develop new technologies and devices, new ideas are being tested and there is still business bring done. In fact, many companies are viewing this situation as a chance to increase productivity and R&D and become better companies.
