Ergis launches a new OLED encapsulation film platform

Poland-based Ergis Group has developed a new solution for OLED panel encapsulation. The noDiffusion film, developed in collaboration with Ergis' partners can be adopted as both the flexible substrate and the encapsulation layer for OLED devices.

Ergis noDiffusion structure

The Ergis noDiffusion film offers high barrier properties, high level of optical transmittance and a low level of light scattering. This enables the production of OLED displays with extended lifetimes, efficiency and image properties. The noDiffusion film can also be used in the production of solar panels to increase panel efficiency and lifetimes.

Ergis says that the biggest advantage of its new film solution is the lower manufacturing costs, as the films already include an embedded encapsulation layer and could optionally include an embedded electrode layer.

Can a transparent OLED TV show a black color?

In early 2019, LG Display started producing 55 transparent OLED TV panels, and these are slowly entering the market - in commercial displays, transportation displays, and perhaps even the consumer market - with Xiaomi’s first consumer transparent OLED TV (although at over $7,000 for a 55 display, it is not really priced at consumer level - and its usability is also not clear).

An OLED display is an emissive display, and some of our readers asked us - how is it possible for a transparent OLED TV to show a black color? Is the image above, released by Xiaomi, a fake?

Why are rollable displays more challenging to produce than foldable displays?

Foldable OLED display have been introduced in 2019, and today we have several premium smartphones that feature such interesting new displays. Most analysts agree that the foldable OLED market will grow at a very fast rate in the future.

Rollable OLED displays, however, are yet to enter the market. Display makers have been showing rollable display prototypes for many years, but commercial products aren't here yet. LG Display will hopefully start shipping the rollable 65RX OLED TV soon, and the company also says it will ship a rollable OLED smartphone in 2021.

A look into eMagin's AR/VR dPd technology

In 2012, we first heard that eMagin is developing direct emission (or direct patterning, as the company calls it) OLED microdisplays. Fast forward into 2020, and the company is aiming to soon start producing such displays (it already launched its first such panel, see more below). In this article we'll look into the technology and the latest updates from eMagin.

White OLED with CF structure vs dPd structure (eMagin)
All current OLED microdisplays on the market from all producers use a white OLED with color filter. This is a simple design, but it is wasteful in energy, as the filters block around 80% of the light, and in addition to achieve the white color one needs to use a blue OLED emitter (in addition to a yellow one, or red and green ones) - and blue is the least efficient color for OLED emission.

SID Displayweek 2020 is going to be virtual this year, here's what to expect

The SID DisplayWeek 2020, the premier event for the display industry, will be held on August 3-7, 2020. The entire experience will now be online. While SID says that attendees can enjoy a full exhibition and conference, we wanted to reach out to our friend Sri Peruvemba, a board director and VP at SID, to learn more about what a virtual event means for SID.

Thanks for your time Sri - can you explain to us how does this virtual event work?

An exhibitor or attendee registers themselves like they do each year; upon completion, they will get access to the virtual forum. When you click on the event platform, you will be greeted with a reception area and have the choice of going to a talk in one of the various rooms that are organized by sessions just like the physical event, or you can walk the exhibits where each booth will have product details, images, videos, downloadable materials etc; you can attend the Business Conference, the CEO Forum, or the Women in Technology; you could attend classes and training sessions or just hang out in the networking area.
