Boeing installs OLEDs in its 2019 777 ecoDemonstrator plane

Boeing's ecoDemonstrator is an innovation program that takes promising technologies and tests them in a real aircraft. The company chooses a different airplane each year to test the new technologies.

In 2019 Boeing chose a 777 aircraft, and installed several new technologies with an aim to test enhanced safety, reduced fuel consumption and noise - and also to make for a better passenger experience. In 2019 Boeing installed OLED displays as main displays and also in the ceiling. Boeing may adopt such OLEDs in future aircrafts.

Sharp has developed a 30" 4K rollable OLED panel

Sharp announced that it has developed, in collaboration with NHK, a 30" rollable 4K OLED panel on an IGZO backplane. This is a direct emission OLED, which sharp says is the world's largest ever produced (LG's OLEDs all use color filters).

Sharp's 30'' 4K direct-emission rollable OLED prototype

Sharp's OLED panel is deposited on a thin-film substrate, and has a thickness of 0.5 mm. The display uses NHK's signal processing and panel driving technologies to "improve the brightness uniformity and video clarity".

Samsung releases a video to help you find burn-in marks in your OLED TV, suggests a switch to QLED

Samsung released a short video that may help you find burn-in marks in your OLED TV. The video should be run on your OLED TV, and it shows a red image that will (according to Samsung) show visible marks if there are any issues in your TV.

If you did find such marks - Samsung suggested to contact a service center - or switch to one of its QLED LCDs... I wonder if this is a mart marketing move as Samsung itself is now committed to OLED TV technology and will start producing QD-OLEDs in 2021. Samsung is probably hoping that no one will remember this video by then...

The Fraunhofer FEP Monarch flexible transparent OLED lighting kit - hands on review

In 2018 the Fraunhofer FEP institute announced it is starting to offer a design kit that includes several flexible and transparent OLED lighting panels. The Monarch Kit includes several colored butterflies samples, and the researchers were kind enough to send us one such kit for a short review.

So first of all, these OLEDs look beautiful. They shine a beautiful uniform colored light and are very nicely done. There's not much functionality, but it shows the potential of flexible OLED lighting quite nicely.

CNet tests the Galaxy Fold and shows that it lasts 120,00 aggressive folding cycles

Samsung recently re-launched its foldable OLED smartphone, the Galaxy Fold - and now the first reviews are coming in. CNet posted an interested video in which they put the Galaxy Fold to a folding cycles test, using a what seems to be an aggressive machine that folds and unfolds it quickly.

The Galaxy Fold lasted for 14 hours - or 120,000 folds. Samsung says its own tests show that the smartphone lasts for over 200,000 folds. So the CNet test falls short of that - but I have to say that CNet's machine seems rather more aggressive than a normal folding would be...

Here is Audi's Digital OLED lighting taillight technology

In August 2019 Audi announced a new OLED lighting technology, called Digital OLED, which uses multi-segment OLED taillight modules that can show signs and information - or just display new lighting designs. This is not a new idea, but it is interesting to see Audi's new take on it. Audi unveiled the technology at the ISAL19 trade-show:

The modules use 50 red OLED triangular panels that can be controlled like a dot-matrix display. The OLED panels were provided by OLEDWorks.

Here are Fraunhofer's modular flexible OLED lighting strips

A few days ago the Fraunhofer FEP institute announced that it developed OLED light strips made from tiled flexible OLED lighting panels, and now we have these nice looking strips on video:

The video was taken at Fraunhofer FEP's booth at the International Symposium on Automotive Lighting 2019 in Darmstadt, Germany. The strips, produced in a sheet-to-sheet process can be connected without creating visible interruptions to the active surface. This makes it possible to produce infinitely long OLED light strips. Each segment can be controlled individually - so that different dimming or dynamic signalling can be achieved.

Xiaomi shows a concept smartphone with a flexible OLED wrapped around the edges

Update: it turns out that the display is actually wrapped around almost the entire device, see new video below:

Xiaomi is teasing a new smartphone design, with a concept model it calls the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha. The phone uses a flexible OLED wrapped around the edges.

This is similar to Samsung's edge OLED smartphone designs which has been in production for many years - but Xiaomi is taking it one step further with the display wrapping completely around the edges.
